A SYDNEY man who came face-to-face with the hostage gunman says he threatened to "shoot him too". 
 
Craig Stoker was walking down Phillip St after buying a coffee in the Lindt cafe when he bumped into the gunman.

"He was wearing a black T-shirt with white writing on it and a headband and carrying a blue bag," Mr Stoker, a father-of-four from Eastlakes, said.

"The bag bumped into me and there was something hard in it.

"I said: 'Watch where you are f...ing goin"

"He turned round and said: 'Do you want me to shoot you too?'.

"I looked into his eyes and they were crazy. I was pretty freaked out."

The bearded man was with two others who were similarly dressed.

Mr Stoker had no idea how lucky his escape was.

He went in to Sydney Hospital to have some stitches removed and only realised a siege was taking place when he came out.

"I had no idea what was going on," Mr Stoker said.

"When I found out I was pretty shaken up. I am going to buy a lottery ticket right now."

Meanwhile, exclusion zones around the Martin Place siege have been pushed back as members of the public nervously wait for developments in the apparent terrorist event.

Police moved a cordon on Macquarie St south to Hyde Park about 1.45pm and shut businesses, office buildings and the Land and Environment Court on the street.

Other exclusion zones were widened around the Lindt cafe, where gunmen with an Islamic terrorist flag were holding shoppers and staff hostage.



Parliament House, adjacent Martin Place, was shut earlier in the day as the siege began.

At Sydney Hospital, also on Macquarie St, all elective surgeries were cancelled, no new patients were being admitted and people already in the building were being asked to leave via a rear exit.

Medical staff at the hospital, which is about 500m from the siege, were being asked to stay on duty in apparent readiness for casualties.

Nervous office staff, many of them evacuated from nearby buildings, gathered around cafe TV screens to watch the hostage drama unfolding.



Many watched Prime Minister Tony Abbott's national address intently.

Others continued to work, using laptops and tablets at cafe tables.

Police carrying sniper rifles entered Martin Place about one hour after the siege began.

Earlier, witnesses described seeing cafe staff and shoppers pinned up against the building's front window, with their arms raised and a black and white IS flag in the window.



Janice Johnson saw the drama unfold from a cafe opposite the Lindt building.

"There was an Islamic State flag in the window and the people in the cafe window had their eyes closed and some had their heads bowed," she said.

"Police were sneaking up to the door with their guns drawn.

"We were told to get to the back of the room and were then ordered to evacuate."

Heavily armed police cleared Martin Place as the attack unfolded.

Ms Johnson said she was warned by police about a possible imminent explosion.

Ambulances were stationed around Martin Place to attend to any casualties.

Sheila McLaughlin described how she was walking to work at her office next to the Lindt cafe when the hostages were being taken.

"I heard shouting coming from inside the cafe and then the doors slammed shut," she said.

"I was probably about 20m away when it happened and I'm still shaking because it could have been me."

Three people are dead and four injured after a 16-hour siege in Sydney's CBD.The gunman at the cafe, named as self-styled Iranian cleric Man Haron Moris, is one of the dead


The crisis, which began about 10am (AEDT) on Monday when 17 people were taken hostage at the popular Lindt cafe in Martin Place, escalated dramatically about 2am on Tuesday. Heavily armed police stormed the building in a hail of gunfire with Moris being pronounced dead after being taken to hospital.

Another man, aged 34, and a woman, aged 38, were pronounced dead after being taken to hospital. Two women have been taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, while a male police officer suffered a non-life threatening wound to his face from gunshot pellets and was taken to hospital. Another woman has been taken to hospital with a gunshot wound to her shoulder.

A 35-year-old woman was taken to hospital as a precaution. The crisis, which began about 10am (AEDT) on Monday at the popular Lindt cafe in Martin Place, escalated dramatically about 2am on Tuesday when shots were fired and police stormed the premises.



'Unbelievably overnight we have lost some of our own in an attack we would never thought we would see here in our city,' Premier Mike Baird said at a press conference before 6am.'I come before you with the heaviest of hearts.'Mr Baird said the government's thoughts and prayers were with the innocent victims of an 'horrendous vicious attack.''I want to say to their family and friends that everyone in NSW stands beside you,' he said.



'My thoughts also remain with those hostages who have been freed.'They will be provided every support they need in coming days and weeks and months.'Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione said officers had so far accounted for 17 hostages.This figures includes the five who escaped on Monday afternoon.




Some had traumatic injuries, some had medical conditions.Six were uninjured. 'We also have a lone gunman who has been shot and killed and we have a male police officer who has been injured as a result of gunshot wounds to the face,' he said.'I have talked to that officer. He is in good condition.



'The officer was likely to remain in hospital for some time. 'Not too long, we hope, but he is well and grateful to be alive,' Mr Scipione said.A police critical incident investigation into the incident which will be overseen by the Professional Standards Command.'We need to find out what's happened here and inside that cafe,' Mr Scipione said.'It's not time to speculate or develop theories.


'Mr Scipione echoed Mr Baird's comments, saying he could only imagine the terror the hostages had gone through.'They're very brave people who in many cases were just buying a cup of coffee and they got caught up in this dreadful affair,' he said.'We should reflect on their courage, the courage that they displayed during the many hours in that room.

They had to make decisions, hard decisions, and our heart goes out to them.'Mr Scipione acknowledged the grief of the families of the two hostage who had died.'The pain they've been through, not knowing what was happening to their loved ones and not being able to help them,' he said.Just after 2am on Tuesday morning, a man in a white shirt ran from the cafe with his arms raised, dropped to the ground on police orders and was escorted to safety.Minutes later, two more men and two women raced outside and were directed away by police.

Their escape was followed by rapid gunfire as heavily-armed officers stormed the cafe.A second volley of shots erupted before the cafe filled with police and paramedics.Ambulances rushed the most seriously injured to hospitals around the city.

At 2.40am, NSW Police tweeted: 'Sydney siege is over.
