Extract: A Sydney man who made headlines last year after the Australian Government refused him a passport on national security grounds has been charged with being a member of a listed terrorist organisation.

He has been charged with being a member of a listed terrorist organisation — the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

Being a member of the PKK carries a maximum penalty of 10 years' imprisonment.

The PKK has links to the Kurdish militia known as the People's Protection Units, or YPG.

A number of Australians have been investigated over links to the YPG, which is a key member of the coalition fighting against Islamic State in northern Syria.

In February, federal prosecutors dropped their case against Melbourne man Jamie Williams.

Mr Williams was arrested under foreign fighter laws after he attempted to fly from Melbourne to Syria to join the YPG and fight against IS.

Three Australians are known to have been killed fighting with the YPG in Syria.

In December last year, Queensland man Ashley Dyball was questioned by AFP officers at Brisbane airport after returning from fighting with the YPG.

Mr Dyball's passport has been cancelled but he has never been charged.
