The Chinese government has ramped up its war of words with Australia with accusations of 'hyping up' tensions over live firing exercises in the waters between Australia and New Zealand.

New Zealand confirmed the second day of exercises in the Tasman Sea on Saturday after a Chinese warship was seen firing a gun.

It came after three vessels of the People's Liberation Army Navy conducted drills about 630km off Eden, NSW in recent days

Qantas, Emirates, Virgin and Air New Zealand modified flight paths between Australia and New Zealand after receiving initial reports of live firing on Friday.

China's defence Ministry spokesman Wu Qian hit back on Sunday to say that its fleet's training and exercise area is far away from the Australian coastline.

'China's actions are in full compliance with international law and international practices and will not affect aviation flight safety,' he said.

'Australia, knowing this well, made unreasonable accusations against China and deliberately hyped it up. We are deeply surprised and strongly dissatisfied with this.'

'China hopes that Australia will view the relations between the two countries and the two militaries with an objective and rational attitude, be more sincere and professional, and truly do something practical for the stable development of the relations between the two countries and the two militaries.'

The Prime Minister told Q+A host Patricia Karvelas high immigration on Labor's watch was inevitable after Australia's border reopened from the Covid closure.

'When the borders were lifted, there was always going to be a spike,' he told the ABC on Monday night.

'Australians coming home, visitors coming here for the first time, students.'

But he blamed housing prices on lack of supply, not soaring demand from migrants.

'We want them to be more affordable. The key there of course, as well, is supply,' he said.

Mr Albanese blamed the Coalition for blocking Labor's plan to cap annual international student numbers at 270,000 - even though imported skilled workers and not students were pushing up demand to buy property.

'On immigration, particularly when it comes to housing, the biggest thing that you could do, area where you could reduce the amount is in students because some of that frankly was being abused,' the Prime Minister said.
Immigration levels surged to record levels above 500,000, on a net basis, in late 2023, almost two years after Australia's borders reopened.

The 444,480 intake for 2024 was still more than double the 194,400 pre-Covid level in the year to June 2020, covering the early part of the pandemic with arrivals and departures factored in.

As a home owner himself, Mr Albanese admitted that rising house prices benefitted homeowners but made it harder for aspiring buyers.

'For the good of people who own homes, it's good but for people who are trying to get into home ownership, it makes it more difficult,' he said.

'That's just the truth of the matter.

An Australian earning an average, full-time salary of $102,742 is effectively locked out of buying a house in a capital city market, with $1million now the typical asking price.

This is especially hurting the young saving up for a mortgage deposit, with house prices still soaring by double-digit annual figures in western Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide.

The Albanese Government and state premiers have vowed to build 1.2million 'well located' homes over the five years to 2029.

But in the year to September, just 177,702 new residential dwelling were completed, a level well below the 240,000 annual figure needed for Labor's targets.

Construction companies are also more likely to be insolvent because of high building material costs, creating problems during a housing shortage crisis.

Mr Albanese's Housing Minister Clare O'Neil last year outraged Triple J's youth audience when she suggested the government did not want to bring down house prices.

'We want to bring house price growth into something sustainable - so we're not trying to bring down house prices,' Ms O'Neil told the Hack program.

'But we don't want to see some of the growth that we've seen in some parts of the country - where you're getting double-digit increases in house prices year-on-year.

Excerpt: It was a Virgin Australia pilot who first raised the alarm. At 9.58am on Friday Feb 21, the pilot intercepted a warning from the Chinese navy: a flotilla of warships were conducting live-fire drills in the Tasman Sea, some 300 nautical miles off the eastern coast of Australia.

The message – broadcast on the 121.5 MHz emergency radio channel used by commercial pilots to communicate – was relayed to the air traffic controller, who then passed it to the military.

Although Australia has rebuked Beijing for providing such short notice, the government stressed the naval exercises were not illegal. China has countered that all criticism is "deliberately overhyped".

Veerle Nouwens, executive director of the International Institute for Strategic Studies Asia, told The Telegraph that the live-fire exercises were a sign not just to Australia, but also to the US and its allies, that "China is capable of deploying at distance".

"It's a sign that China's military capabilities shouldn't be underestimated," Ms Nouwens said.

Excerpt: Australia's defence chief has admitted it missed a warning about a Chinese warship live firing exercise - contradicting Prime Minster Anthony Albanese's timeline of when it was known about.

Admiral David Johnston told a Senate estimates committee on Wednesday that a warning from a New Zealand warship that Australia was relying on to track three Chinese warships off Australia's east coast was received in Canberra at around 11am last Friday.

This was 90 minutes after the firing started and 50 minutes after a similar warning was reported by a Virgin Australia' airline pilot.

Opposition Home Affairs spokesman James Paterson said the delayed notice meant there was no advance warning of the exercise in international waters.

'It's not really notification of an upcoming exercise if we only find out about it after it has commenced, is it,' he told Senate estimates.

There are mounting calls from the Opposition to explain why the government took so long to find out about the exercise.

'It's remarkable that Australia was relying on civilian aircraft for early warning about military exercises by a formidable foreign task group in our region,' Senator Patterson told The Australian.

'The Prime Minister's attempt to mislead the public by suggesting there was notice given by the People's Liberation Army – Navy (PLA-N) and it was reported through military channels in a timely way is yet more evidence of his weak leadership.
