Two influential Muslim leaders have criticised stabbing victim Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel over comments he made, which they claim insulted their religion.

The bishop, 53, is in a stable condition in hospital after he was allegedly stabbed by a teen about 7pm Monday while he led a service at Christ the Good Shepherd Church in Wakeley in what police have called a 'terrorist incident'.

The teenager was captured on the online broadcast of the church service holding a blade, lunging at the bishop and shouting 'Allahu Akbar'.

A later video showed the alleged 16-year-old perpetrator detained by police on the ground inside the church before he spoke in Arabic.

The words are understood to translate to: 'If he didn't swear at my Prophet, I wouldn't be here. If he didn't involve himself in my religion, I wouldn't be here.'

THE GOOD NEWS!

Police were injured and paramedics sheltered in the church when riots broke out after the attack as some tried to gain access to the alleged attacker, who was being held in the church during the unrest outside.

'We believe that people not associated with the church have turned up as an excuse to riot,' NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb said.

The alleged attacker - a 16-year-old MUSLIM with a history of knife offences - is yet to be charged.

He remained under police guard in hospital and was likely to remain there for a number of days, Commissioner Webb told ABC Radio on Wednesday.

The incident met the criteria to be declared an act of terrorism, which granted police enhanced powers, but it remained to be seen if the teen would be charged with terrorism offences, she said.

Mohamed Shaar, who runs the Sydney Ruqyah Centre, and The Australian Muslim social media page, which has more than 2.6million followers, have both said some of the bishop's teachings were hate speech.

'What's funny is all those Muslims saying quick recovery, and I hope he gets better and so on,' Mr Shaar said.

He then singled out the local council, asking them 'Where were you when he was abusing our prophet and our religion?'

'Why haven't you, Mr Politician and Mr Community Leader, said something to him that could have solved the issues?'

'He ran his mouth and said that our Prophet is rotten in a grave. We love our Prophet.

'Leave our religion and Prophet alone.'

THE POLICE ATTACK THE ANTI-ISLAM PROTESTORS

At a press conference early on Tuesday morning in Sydney, New South Wales State Police Commissioner Karen Webb declared the attack a 'terrorist incident'.

'We believe there are elements that are satisfied in terms of religious motivated extremism,' she said.

Australian Federal Police Commissioner Reece Kershaw was asked to confirm if the teenager had an Islamic motivation, but despite the witness testimony, he would not say.

'We have a lot of intelligence to go through and confirm,' he said.

'I can't go through that. One of the things I want to say it's a disgraceful act from the community who attacked police at that scene.'

NSW Police make first arrest from violence that erupted after bishop's stabbing

A teenager has become the first person to be arrested following a riot that started after Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel was stabbed during a livestreamed sermon.

Excerpt: NSW Police have made their first arrest following the violence that erupted after a prominent Orthodox Christian bishop was stabbed while giving a sermon at a church in southwestern Sydney.

Chaos erupted after the incident, with 2,000 rioters swarming the church and the surrounding streets.

Police cars were smashed and officers suffered injuries.

On Wednesday, NSW Police said they executed a search warrant and arrested a 19-year-old man, who has been taken to Blacktown Police Station.

Footage from the night shows a giant crowd surrounding the church chanting: "Bring him out."

Paramedics rushing to help the injured also confronted a hostile crowd and faced direct threats.

At one point, some paramedics were unable to leave the church for three-and-a-half hours, with paramedics describing the scenes as terrifying and extremely violent.

Police Commissioner Karen Webb vowed to find and arrest anyone responsible for the riot, launching Strike Force Dribbs.

"It might not be today. It might not be tomorrow. But we'll find you and we'll come and arrest you," she said.

Footage of the arrest shows specialist tactical police with Strike Force Dribbs storming the home of a teenager in suburban Sydney on Wednesday afternoon, taking him into custody for the alleged offences of rioting, affray and damaging police vehicles.

"Police search warrant, open the door," the officers yell before entering the home on Powers Rd in Doonside about 5.40pm.

They arrested a 19-year-old man.

"At this stage, you are under arrest for affray," a police officer told the man outside the house.

"You are under arrest for malicious damage of police vehicles.

"The commissioner of police told you we were coming. We are here.

"Turn around, you are under arrest."

The young man turns around and the police put cuffs on him.

The officers then load him into a police van and take him to Blacktown Police Station.

Father Isaac Royal, 39, also suffered stab wounds during the sermon attack.

He was discharged from hospital on Wednesday.

The bishop remains in hospital in a stable condition.

A WhatsApp voice note has emerged of a man praising the alleged knifeman's actions and claiming the Bishop 'deserves to be slaughtered'. 

'I'll be honest with you, at the end of the day, anyone that talks about the prophet (unintelligible Arabic) ... deserves to get slaughtered, bashed whatever you want to call it,' the man said.

'This kid at 15, 16 years old had the, had the (unintelligible Arabic)... courage to go and do what he done.'

The man praises the teenager as a 'soldier'

The guts he had to do what he done,' the man said.

'No man nowadays has an ounce of what he has (unintelligible Arabic).

'We should all strive to be like this kid.'

The man claimed he was 'jealous' of the alleged knifeman's actions.
