The Coniston Massacre was the last documented massacre of First Nations people in Australia. Over 60 First Nations people were killed throughout the Central Desert region, leaving a traumatic mark on the lives of many.

Abos claim White trapper Fred Brooks raped one of these creatures

The massacre occurred after a white dingo trapper, Fred Brooks, was found murdered on Coniston Station in 1928. Brooks' body was found with traditional weapons in a shallow grave.

After his death, a reprisal party was formed and led on horseback by Mounted Constable George Murray. The party was made up of both civilians and police.

Over a period of several months over 60 Aboriginal women, men, and children were killed at different sites. These events became known as the Coniston Massacre

Two Warlpiri men, Arkikra and Padygar, were arrested for the murder of Brookes. They were held in Darwin before being acquitted (found not guilty). There are many accounts by Aboriginal eye-witnesses that point to Kamalyarrpa Japanangka, also known as 'Bullfrog', as the true killer of Brooks.

In 1928, scarcity of resources like food and water had led  to tensions between settlers and Aboriginal people across the Central Australian region. Accounts from 1928 highlight that Brooks was killed due to breaching Warlpiri marriage law. Brooks had been living at a waterhole called Yurrkuru, on Coniston station near a group of Warlpiri people, including Bullfrog

While Brooks did not have an Aboriginal wife, many first-person accounts highlight that he placed demands on Bullfrog's wives, and secondary accounts suggest he may have sexually assaulted one of his wives.

Marriage law was governed by Aboriginal law during this time, and breaking that law was a punishable offence. The violence that erupted at Coniston highlights the cultural misunderstandings that often created conflict throughout early colonisation. According to Warlpiri law, Bullfrog acted lawfully in exercising his traditional Aboriginal marriage law. But the consequences of the reprisal massacre were devastating for Aboriginal people across the region. Warlpiri, Anmatyerre, and Kaytetye people mourn the loss of family who were killed during the Coniston Massacre.

The events of Coniston highlight the breakdown in British law during this time period. Settlers acted outside their law when the killings took place, rather than allowing Bullfrog to be brought to trial (even in a western context).

No one was charged for the more than 60 murders, and a board of enquiry that was set up to investigate ruled that the reprisal party had "acted in self defence".

The memories of Coniston are still fresh for Aboriginal people across the Central Australian region. On Friday the 24th of August, people from all over the Northern Territory meet at Yurrkuru, Brooks Soak, 60kms east of Yuendumu to recognise and mourn the loss of loved ones that were killed during 1928.

Western Australian police have charged the man accused of the brutal bashing murder of a Perth teenager with two more charges – including stealing crutches from a 13-year-old.

Jack Steven James Brearley, 21, also faces charges of aggravated assault and stealing, WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch said on Friday.

Mr Brearly will face a Perth court in November

Fifteen-year-old Cassius Turvey was allegedly bashed with a metal pole while walking home from school with friends in Middle Swan earlier this month.

He suffered serious head injuries and died in hospital on Sunday.

WA police are examining allegations racial slurs were made towards Cassius but have refused to speculate on any potential motive.

Mr Blanch said the new charges related to a 13-year-old who was with Cassius at the time of the alleged assault

Earlier, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese paid tribute to Cassius' family, saying the Indigenous boy's alleged murder was "clearly" racially motivated.

Mr Albanese said it was a terrible tragedy.

"This attack that, clearly, is racially motivated just breaks your heart," he said.

"We are a better country than that, and my heart goes out to the family and the friends."

Police say Cassius was walking with friends on October 13 when they were approached by Mr Brearley, who had been a passenger in a ute.

It's alleged he chased the group of boys before attacking Cassius with a metal pole.

Detectives have identified four people they believe were inside the ute. No one else has been charged.

Police said Mr Brearley's vehicle was damaged a day prior to the assault but there is no suggestion Cassius had any involvement.

The youths first attacked him at 5.45pm under Woolworths and stole a bottle of alcohol. A short time later, as Rick was walking out another carpark exit, he was attacked again by another group.

Kiara had flown to Darwin and was beside her father's side when he died.

Police charged two males, aged 16 and 18, last week. Their charges of unlawfully causing serious harm and stealing are likely to be upgraded.

Four other attackers are still being sought by police

Across the country, smouldering eucalyptus leaf smoke settled on thousands of Australians mourning the death of a 15-year-old First Nations boy Cassius Turvey.

"How many children do we have to send to the grave?" Wiradjuri elder Jenny Munro said at a vigil in Sydney on Wednesday evening, the crowd heavy with candles and grief.

"We've lost so many children in a battle they aren't even prepared for."

Hundreds gathered outside the Sydney Town Hall, and at more than 40 rallies and vigils held across Australia on Wednesday.

The Indigenous boy's mother led the march through Perth's CBD calling for "change in the name of Cassius".

Cassius died in hospital in October, 10 days after he was allegedly beaten with a metal pole while walking home from school in his uniform.

"That boy represented our hopes, our dreams, our future and they took it from us," Gumbaynggirr Dunghutti Bundjalung woman Elizabeth Jarrett told the vigil in Sydney.

"He represents every single son, every brother, right across this vast continent. And we won't ever forget it.

Wiradjuri teenager Ethan Lyons also spoke at the Sydney memorial.

"We remind this nation that we are young and full of life, like Cassius," the student, still in his school uniform, told the crowd.

"But we also remind them that young people are watching, we watch the white supremacy that runs deep in this country

Shocking footage shows a man Coon knocking on doors for help after being stabbed in the stomach in Adelaide.

The man was left with life-threatening injuries after being knifed in Parkside, south of the CBD - with a girl, 17, found injured nearby.

CCTV shows him knocking on the doors of neighbours for help while holding his stomach.

He knocked on several doors before rushing off after nobody answered

Police and paramedics were called just after 6am and found the man, 20, with serious injuries.

He was rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital by ambulance and remains in a serious but stable condition.

Police arrested a 26-year-old and later charged him with causing serious harm with intent.

He has been refused police bail and will appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday.

The three people involved are believed to have been known to each other. 

Police said a knife believed to have been involved in the stabbing had been seized.

The Liberal Party's candidate for Narre Warren North says Australia should not recognise First Nations people because "we won this land fair and square", that waste from nuclear energy should be dumped in Alice Springs, and that he would vote to ban abortion.

In audio recorded on Tuesday and leaked to The Sunday Age, Dragan, declared he was "100 per cent" opposed to a treaty with First Nations people, would cross the floor on any emissions-reduction legislation, and ban abortion if it came before a vote in Parliament

"There's no such thing as traditional Australians," Dragan, 26, said in the recording in reference to First Nations people. "Because Australia is a post-colonial concept.

"We won this land fair and square. It's like telling Britain to give the land back to the Vikings, and the Vikings to give it back to the Romans. And same with Romania — to give Transylvania back to the Hungarians. I mean, come on man, it's bollocks. It's absolute bollocks."

When The Sunday Age visited the early voting booth at Narre Warren's Foundation Learning Centre on Saturday, where Dragan was handing out how-to-vote cards, the Liberal candidate "declined to comment" in response to questions about the views he had expressed in the recording. He then rushed off to his car.

In a statement released by the Liberal Party shortly after, Dragan said he "unreservedly apologise for my insensitive and inappropriate language". He said his comments did not reflect the views or policy positions of the party
Dragan made the comments captured in the audio during a conversation outside the early voting centre on Tuesday. In the recording, he said the only time he cared about "pre-Australian" history was at a museum, and that Indigenous education in schools should be wound back.

He claimed he was Indigenous because he was born in Australia.

"Everything that you find now, all these institutions, even this government thing they got, it's European – it's not bloody Aboriginal," Dragan said. "If we're going to go by what's Aboriginal, we might as well abolish everything, get our camping chairs and live in the desert."
