A man accused of attempting to set fire to a synagogue has been allegedly linked to two other anti-Semitic attacks, including the targeting of a prominent Jewish leader's former home.

The revelations come as the nation's spy chief warned the Australian Jewish community is being increasingly conflated with the Israeli state amid 'festering' tension over the war in Gaza.

Leon Sofilas is the first person charged over the January 17 attack on a house in Dover Heights, in Sydney's east, that was previously owned by Executive Council of Australian Jewry co-leader Alex Ryvchin.

Sofilas was charged on Wednesday with being an accessory before the fact to the incident, in which cars were set on fire and defaced with anti-Jewish slurs and the house was splashed with red paint.

The 37-year-old was also accused of being involved in an anti-Semitic graffiti attack on a series of vehicles and houses in nearby Queens Park on January 11.

Sofilas was already in custody after being charged with a graffiti and attempted arson attack on Newtown synagogue, in Sydney's inner west, on the same day.

His co-accused in that case, Adam Moule, 33, has also been charged over the Queens Park incident, with the duo facing identical charges of being an accessory before the fact to the property damage and participating in a criminal group.

Both men will remain in custody before a scheduled appearance in Downing Centre Local Court on April 3

A suspected anti-Semitic terror plot has been revealed as a hoax after police made several arrests over the caravan loaded with explosives abandoned by a Sydney roadside

The caravan lay beside a property in Dural, north-west Sydney, for 12 days in January until a local resident reported it, sparking a multi-agency probe.

An investigation revealed the explosives found inside could have created a 40m-wide blast.

But Australian Federal Police Deputy Commissioner Krissy Barrett revealed on Monday that it was a 'criminal con job'.

'We believe the person pulling the strings wanted changes to their criminal status, but maintained a distance from their scheme and hired alleged local criminals to carry out parts of their plan

'However, the plan was foiled.'

Early on Monday, officers from NSW Police and Australian Federal Police launched a series of raids across Sydney's east and arrested 14 people in connection with the caravan.

They have been charged with 49 offences.

The plan was to buy a van, rig it with explosives and anti-Semitic materials and then inform law enforcement about a terrorist attack, Ms Barrett said.

'The caravan was never going to cause a mass casualty event.

'This twisted self serving criminality has terrorised Jewish Australians.

'What organized crime has done to the Jewish community is reprehensible, and it won't go without consequences.'

During the investigation, Ms Barrett said police received tip offs about other terror plots and they were investigate but in the end they were 'fabricated.

'Too many criminals are accused of paying others to carry out anti-Semitic or terrorism incidents to get our attention and divert our resources.'

Ms Barrett also gave some 'advice' to criminals during the press conference:

'Serve your time quietly in prison and stop diverting the resources of terrorism investigators, otherwise your charges could be significantly upgraded

The plot was initially believed to be linked to anti-Semitic attacks after a note was found inside the caravan with the addresses of Jewish people and a synagogue.

It also included the words: 'F*** the Jews.'

But NSW Police Deputy Commissioner David Hudson told reporters on Monday the plot and other alleged hate crimes investigated in the operation Strike Force Pearl were not motivated by anti-Semitism but 'carried out by criminals'.

'It was about causing chaos within the community, causing threat, causing angst, diverting police resources away from their day jobs.'

The charges laid today are not only related to Operation Kissinger - the caravan investigation - but also to Strike Force Pearl, an ongoing investigation into a series of anti-Semitic incidents from November 2024 to January 2025.

Of the 14 arrested, five people have been charged, including a 33-year-old man who police allege spray-painted graffiti on motor vehicles and properties on February 2.

He was due to appear at Parramatta Local Court earlier today.


A 40-year-old man was arrested at Penshurst and police allege that he spray painted graffiti at a home and a school at Maroubra, a shopping centre at Eastgardens, and a home at Eastlakes

He was was due to appear at Sutherland Local Court earlier today.

Two men, aged 41 and 34, were arrested at Burwood Police Station after being transferred from a correctional facility.

Police allege the younger man directed the commission of the arson attacks at Bondi Beach and they say he was remanded in custody and will appear in court on Tuesday. 

The older man was charged with an additional offence of destroy/damage property intend criminal activity of group.

He was remanded in custody to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday 27 March 2025.

The fifth person charged was a 27-year-old woman, facing three counts of possessing prohibited drugs, two counts of possessing/attempting to, prescribed restricted substance, and possessing or using a prohibited weapon.

She was granted conditional bail to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on April 10.

NSW Police don't believe there is any ongoing threat to the community from a terrorist act.

There remains a number of ongoing targets, police said, some of whom are based abroad.

NSW Premier Chris Minns told Daily Mail Australia that NSW government and police can 'never accept' the hateful incidents carried out.

'There is no mistake that these acts have wrought fear and anxiety in our Jewish community and we will not tolerate this, not now, not ever,' he said.

'Police will allege that those arrested today for the most serious of these crimes had criminal and financial motives.


'But nobody should be in any doubt, we have endured a summer of hateful, vicious incidents such as vile anti-Semitic graffiti attacks and many of these appear to have been motivated simply by nasty, racist hatred.

An explosives-laden caravan found in Sydney was a fake anti-Semitic terror plot concocted by criminals and never an actual threat, police have confirmed.

The discovery of the caravan in Dural, which also contained Jewish addresses and a note saying "fuck the Jews" but no detonator, was described by NSW Premier Chris Minns as "terrorism" and a "potential mass casualty event" as soon as the investigation was made public in late January.

Weeks later Mr Minns brought in controversial new hate speech laws, calling them a "strong response to anti-Semitism", while the federal government also cited a spate of alleged anti-Semitic attacks for pushing through its own hate crimes bill, which passed with bipartisan support

But on Monday the Australian Federal Police revealed that "almost immediately, experienced investigators within the JCTT [NSW Joint Counter Terrorism Team] believed that the caravan was part of a fabricated terrorism plot – essentially a criminal con job.

AFP Deputy Commissioner National Security Krissy Barrett said that the public was not informed until today because the JCTT was investigating a continual series of tip-offs, now also determined to be fake, about other terror plots linked to the caravan.

"I can reveal that the caravan was never going to cause a mass casualty event but instead was concocted by criminals who wanted to cause fear for personal benefit," she said.

"We are now confident that all these tip-offs were fabricated, and the caravan plot was an elaborate scheme contrived by organised criminals, domestically and from offshore.

"We believe the person pulling the strings wanted changes to their criminal status but maintained a distance from their scheme and hired alleged local criminals to carry out parts of their plan.

She said an operational strategy was underway to take down the mastermind behind the fake terror plot, in conjunction with overseas law enforcement agencies.

"Those creating fake terror threats, including using anti-Semitism to elicit a desired response from law enforcement or the courts, face being charged for creating fake plots – and unfortunately for them, they will face the full experience, capability and dogged determination of terrorism investigators," she said.

Mr Minns said in a joint statement with Police Minister Yasmin Catley on Monday that the fabricated plot had hurt the Jewish community.

"There is no mistake that these acts have wrought fear and anxiety in our Jewish community and we will not tolerate this, not now, not ever," he said.

Also on Monday NSW Police carried out a series of raids and made 14 arrests following investigations into separate alleged anti-Semitic incidents in Sydney.

A man, 33, was arrested in Wentworthville over an alleged graffiti spree on February 1, and a 40-year-old man was arrested in Penshurst over three different alleged graffiti incidents.

Two other men, aged 41 and 34, were arrested at Burwood Police Station after being transferred from a correctional facility and charged over an alleged arson attack in Bondi in October.

Free speech advocates responded to the caravan revelations by saying the new laws should now be scrapped.

NSW Libertarian MP John Ruddick quoted the AFP on X and said in response on X: "Pity it took weeks for police to publicise what they 'immediately' knew.

"Anti free speech laws passed in shadow of this 'criminal con job.

Former Liberal MP and lead Libertarian senate candidate for NSW Craig Kelly also weighed in on social media.

"So it's now been confirmed that the caravan full of explosives, a supposed 'terror event' was nothing but a fabricated event. Yet this event was cited as justification for suppressing free speech with the new 'Hate Speech' laws," he wrote.

"So perhaps Mr Albanese and Mr Dutton will now repeal the Hate Speech laws given they were passed based upon an event which has now been confirmed was fabricated.

An alleged drug smuggler who's been hiding in Asia and the Middle East is suspected of being the mastermind behind a hoax 'terror' caravan plot.

Sayet Erhan Akca, 35, left his life in Australia as a former gym and childcare facility owner in mid-2023, after he was charged with attempting to import a commercial quantity of drugs through the AN0M messaging app.

The married father-of-one allegedly left his wife, Georgia, and toddler son behind to flee Australian shores on a boat while on bail for an alleged 600kg drug importation, the Daily Telegraph reported.

A warrant for former businessman's arrest was issued in September 2023 but he remains in hiding 18 months later.

However, Australian Federal Police alleged Akca reached out to authorities to provide information about a caravan full of explosives and anti-Semitic material found in Dural in Sydney's north-west on January 19.

Officers suspect Akca divulged details about the plot in an attempt to cut a deal with prosecutors so he could lower any potential jail sentence and return to his family, who are not accused of any wrongdoing.

Akca is also alleged to be behind more than a dozen anti-Semitic arson and graffiti attacks in Sydney since October.
NSW Joint Counter Terrorism Team investigators quickly determined the caravan was likely never intended to cause a terror attack.

'Put simply, the plan was the following: Organise someone to buy a caravan, place it with explosives and written material of anti-Semitic nature, leave it in a specific location and then once that happens, inform law enforcement about an impending terror attack against Jewish Australians.'

Commissioner Barrett issued a warning to criminals offered a part in the alleged scheme

'This is a rare time I will provide advice to criminals – serve your time quietly in prison and stop diverting the resources of terrorism investigators – otherwise your charges could be significantly upgraded,' she said.

'Too many criminals are accused of paying others to carry out anti-Semitic or terrorism incidents to get our attention or divert our resources.

'And too many offenders working in the criminal gig economy are accepting these tasks for money

NSW Police Deputy Commissioner Dave Hudson added that 14 anti-Semitic attacks across Sydney since December were allegedly orchestrated by the same person.

'All of the (Strike Force) Pearl matters, I'm suggesting, the 14 incidents and the caravan job, are all being orchestrated by the same individuals,' Commissioner Hudson said.

The attacks included the firebombing of a childcare in Maroubra and graffiti attacks on multiple homes and cars across the city's eastern suburbs.

Police arrested and charged 14 people on Tuesday in connection with the anti-Semitic displays.

AFP is still working to arrest the alleged overseas organiser.
