Alice Springs rocked by alleged assault on baby
Locals demanding action to stop cycle of violence

Steven Williams | Daily Mail (UK) | 13 December 2024

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-14185299/Alice-Springs-violence-crime-home-invasion.html

Police allege two boys, 16 and 17, broke into a house on Bokhara Street in Larapinta at 2.30pm on Wednesday, demanding cash.

The pair allegedly stole a mum-of-four's wallet and keys before belting them over the head with a with a metal freezer handle.

The impact fractured the infant's skull and caused a brain bleed. She was airlifted to hospital in Adelaide and is now in a stable condition, along with her mother.

It can now be revealed the two teens who were arrested just 90 minutes after the sickening alleged attack were out on bail, despite having a combined 300 criminal charges against them and the NT Police Commissioner Michael Murphy admitting the pair 'are well known to us'.

The Australian reported the 16-year-old had been previously charged with 274 offences and bailed 25 times, while the 17-year-old racked up 19 offences and was bailed 10 times.

Extra police officers from Darwin arrived in the crime-riddled town on Thursday to ramp up 24-7 patrols in the wake of the latest shocking incident.

But fed-up locals have flooded social media demanding that more be done to lock up repeat offenders and stop the revolving door of violence in Alice Springs.

'Why does it always take extreme incidents for a bigger response? They know the problems and they play out time and time again,' the community organisation Action for Alice 2020 wrote on Facebook.

'Why hasn't the suburbs had more presence before this?' It's been happening for weeks.'

The post was inundated with comments from angry locals who fear the cycle of violence is doomed to continue without tougher penalties.

'Absolutely useless without meaningful harsh penalties... and we all know that ain't gonna happen,' one wrote.

Another wrote: 'Without harsher consequences nothing will change. Kids under 14 still get released and if you knock a police officer to the ground you get a month suspended sentence... As long as that doesn't change, good luck with.

A third wrote: 'Time to bring in the military/ AFP as a 'peacekeeping' force. The NT Police clearly do not have sufficient resources to achieve a deterrent factor!'

The baby's father is a government employee who was at work at the time of the alleged assault.

While he praised police for their speedy response to the alleged incident, he doesn't have any faith in Prime Minister Anthony Albanese solving the violent crime crisis in Alice Springs.

'It wouldn't be the same if this was happening to him,' he told The Australian.

'What do you say that doesn't fall on deaf ears?'

'It's upsetting, it's angering, it's frightening, it really is.'

The father also gave an update on his baby girl, whose stable condition 'fluctuates' due to a 'significant skull fracture and a small bleed on the brain'.

Northern Territory Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro and Police Commissioner Murphy also copped criticism from the community after travelling to Alice Springs on Thursday and announcing there would be an increased police presence in the wake of the incident.

Ms Finocchiaro received a hostile reception from anti-crime advocate Darren Clark, who ambushed the chief minister at the airport

'Where have you been?' Mr Clark repeatedly heckled.

'You told us that you were going to protect this town!

'You told us you were going to protect this town. Our women are scared, the place is terrified, you do nothing.

'Why has it taken you so long Lia? Why?

'Absolute disgrace, you promised us, you promised this community.

'It's time to step up or get out.'

He also called on Ms Finocchiaro in a follow-up video to 'resign now'.

Mr Clark also unleashed on NT Police Commissioner Murphy.

'Don't say you've got more police because you don't have them Murphy!' he called out.

'You don't have the police and you know it!'

Commissioner Murphy later said there had been an 'escalation' of crime in Alice Springs since December 3.

There's been a number of serious crimes in Alice Springs, ranging from abductions, sexual assaults and home burglaries and home invasions with the stealing of motor vehicles,' the Commissioner said.

He was confident the NT police could provide protection in Alice Springs without calling backup form the South Australia Police, ADF or AFP.

Chief Minister Finocchiaro said, 'We need to make sure that if we have an ask of the federal government, it's going to deliver for people on the ground'.

'People have a right to be safe in their homes, the community deserves to be safe.'

Prime Minister Albanese has called for the perpetrators of the alleged assault on the mother and baby to face the 'full force of the law'.

'This is a horrific, unspeakable act and my thoughts are with the child and their family at this time,' Mr Albanese said.

'This is unacceptable and the full force of the law should be brought down on these perpetrators.'

Federal Senator and local resident Jacinta Nampijinpa Price described the reports of violence in the Alice Springs community as 'absolutely sickening'.

'The federal government cannot escape responsibility for the disastrous situation we are seeing.'

The two teens aged 16 and 17 accused of the alleged assault faced court on Thursday.

Both teens had been out on bail for violent offences.

Both teens will remain in custody until their next court appearances on February 13.

This town has a reputation for being hot on Abo crime. No mention of race here but this crime has hall marks of Boongs! Like who else would do such a thing?! Who'd get let off on bail for this when they are just teens with a huge rap sheet already?

I couldn't imagine being the parents! Everybody thought they had enough ages ago but the soft Govt with UN masters lets the black clowns persist and now it has come to this! You are expected to follow the law but if the courts won't act properly here you can expect "street justice".

Nineteen people including a 13-year-old girl have been arrested after a fight on a public bus in Adelaide's inner west left a woman with head injuries

The woman was taken to hospital, along with two other people who sustained minor injuries in the incident, which also caused damage to the bus.

Police said the fight involved two groups and broke out after 8:30am when several people got on board at West Terrace in Adelaide's CBD.

A short time later, the driver stopped on George Street at Thebarton and sought help.

"A fight erupted between these two groups of people and the bus eventually stopped ... at Thebarton," Acting Assistant Commissioner Yvette Clark said.

"The bus driver alighted from the vehicle and went and called police.

"These factions are known to each other. It did result in the bus being damaged, windows being smashed.

Police initially said "at least" 17 people had been arrested and charged with aggravated affray and property damage, but have since upwardly revised that figure to 19.

The suspects include several people in their 20s, but also several teenagers, and range in age from 13 to 58.

The woman who suffered head injuries was taken to hospital by ambulance, but her injuries "are not considered life-threatening at this time", police said.

"The parties who were injured, as far as we're aware, were all involved in the actual fighting," the acting assistant commissioner said.

"There were a few other passengers on the bus but no-one was injured.

Police said the suspects had been bailed ahead of court appearances, but had been banned from public transport for at least three months.

Police have also appealed for anyone who witnessed the incident or has footage of it to contact them or Crime Stoppers.

The incident came hours after police's New Year's Eve operation, which led to 72 arrests and 119 expiation notices, including for drug and behaviour offences.

At 9.55pm, the Joint Emergency Services Communication Centre received reports of three males armed with a blunt weapon attempting to unlawfully enter a residence with four occupants inside on Hillside Gardens in Desert Springs.

The offenders gained access through the front door and allegedly approached a 9-year-old child inside the property, demanding car keys while rummaging through drawers.

The child ran upstairs and alerted his mother who demanded the offenders leave. The offenders allegedly broke windows at the front of the residence with the blunt weapon before fleeing the scene with unknown items stolen

https://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/south-australia/surge-in-arrests-in-adelaide-cbd-prompt-calls-for-new-support-measures/news-story/1703d0e3c5be55bb70c16cb1d8c9c858?giftid=nsvRIHMRB6

Police are calling for improved support services in response to a series of violent disturbances in the Adelaide CBD over the weekend, which saw 12 people arrested between Sunday night and early Monday morning.

Police Commissioner Grant Stevens said "several" of the 12 people arrested were from the APY Lands.

"I have heard that there are some from Alice Springs but I can't confirm," he said.

It is the latest incident near the CBD which followed a brawl on a bus at Thebarton on New Year's Day which resulted in 19 people arrested, including some from Central Australia.

The recent violence in the CBD "highlights the risks faced by police officers every day", Mr Stevens said.

"When they commence duty, they are putting themselves in harm's way to protect members of the public and incidents like this, affrays, acts of violence, certainly impact the wellbeing of police," Mr Stevens said.

The arrests in the CBD, involving individuals aged 14 to 49, were linked to a variety of offences, including assaulting emergency workers, public fighting, disorderly behaviour, and possession of a knife in a public place.

Five of those arrested were sprayed with OC spray during the incidents, which occurred across multiple locations including North Tce, Grenfell St, Festival Plaza and King William Rd.

Two police officers were injured, requiring hospital treatment, while four others sustained minor injuries.

In an interview with FIVEAA, Acting Assistant Commissioner John De Candia expressed frustration over the growing issue, particularly in the North Tce railway station precinct.

Mr De Candia highlighted the strain on police resources and the high levels of intoxication among those causing disturbances.

"We're really frustrated," he said. "We've been dealing with numerous calls for police resources in the area for some time.

In response to the rising crime and anti-social behaviour, Attorney-General Kyam Maher has extended the "Declared Public Precinct" in the Adelaide CBD until July 2025, providing police with enhanced powers to tackle crime in high-traffic areas.

The new rules, which cover areas such as North Terrace, Rundle Mall, and the Riverbank, will allow police to enforce stricter controls during peak hours.

Despite these efforts from police, concerns from the public continue to mount.

Nicola Bini, a 20-year-old full-time university student from Morphett Vale, explained that she no longer visits the city at night after being attacked in the past. "I've been attacked in the city a few times and a few of my friends have as well," she said. "It's just not safe".

Businesses owners along Grenfell St and North Tce are also worried about the long-term impact of the violence on trade. One business owner, who wished to remain anonymous, said he often heard fights at night.

"We often hear arguments... it's normally a group of people" they said.

Harvey, a 46-year-old father of three from Aldinga Beach, voiced his frustration with the ongoing violence.

"These days it's almost a daily occurrence - youth involved in fights and theft in and around the city," he said. "It discourages people from wanting to go to the city or even out in general.

Abos! What can you expect?! It's a taboo to go around saying that they haven't evolved equally when compared to us. Just look at the devils! :—Lazy, ugly, violent, corrupt, irresponsible, impulsive, destructive, noisy, troublesome, entitled, light fingered, hot-headed and child-like!
