Two mates who bashed and stomped on a couple while waiting in a Covid testing line have been sentenced over the 'cowardly and vicious' attack

Hussein Saleh, 34, and Ali Salim, 35, appeared in Sutherland Local Court on Friday over the attack, which took place on December 28, 2021, in the southern  Sydney suburb of Carlton

Both pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and common assault. Saleh also pleaded guilty to damaging property.

The court heard the incident began after Saleh's wife cut into the line in front of a LandCruiser Prado.

The couple in the LandCruiser had already been waiting for three hours and angrily got out and approached her.

They then returned to their car and beeped at Saleh's wife, who called her husband

Saleh arrived with Salim, whom he'd known from high school and they attempted to smash the driver's window with a screwdriver.

They then broke the driver's side rear-view mirror and climbed on top of the vehicle.

He then stomped on the driver and passenger through the sun-roof and rained down punches on them.

Salim managed to get into the LandCruiser's back seat where he punched the driver in the head, causing injury.

During the attack, the LandCruiser rolled forward and collided with the back of the Lexus containing Saleh's wife and also his mother and the impact shunted other cars lined up into each other.

Magistrate Hugh Donnelly described the footage was 'shocking' and said the attack  was 'cowardly and vicious' executed with a 'high degree of violence'.

'The victim received multiple injuries to the head and face in a retributive attack,' he said, according to the Daily Telegraph.

'The attack was sustained, ferocious and for a long duration. The victims were confined, trapped and defenceless ... and it occurred without warning

Magistrate Donnelly rejected the evidence of Saleh's wife, who claimed the victim got out of his car multiple times to scream and shout at her and punch her car and window.

The magistrate said her claims were not supported by CCTV or other evidence.

The court heard Saleh, a builder, was remorseful and understood the couple would have been fearful.

Character references said Saleh's actions were 'out of character' and that he was not a violent person.

Mr Donnelly noted both men were at a low risk of reoffending and had no or limited criminal history

However, he ruled there was no other option than to sentence the men to stints behind bars.

Saleh was sentenced to 22 months jail with a 14 month non parole period, while Salim was jailed for 18 months with an 11 month non parole period

Saleh and Salim will be eligible for parole in July and April 2024, respectively.

The men applied for bail after their lawyer applied to appeal the sentence in the District Court.

Magistrate Donnelly granted Salim bail, noting there was a chance his sentence could be changed to be served in the community,

But he didn't believe Saleh's sentence would change on appeal and refused his application

This is despite the court hearing his wife was pregnant and due to give birth next month.

The accused Bourke Street killer's mother has revealed how her son has struggled with mental illness and stopped taking his medication two months before allegedly carrying out a deadly rampage

Zain Khan, 26, allegedly drove his mother's white Toyota Aurion down through Melbourne's CBD, ploughing into bystanders before colliding with two other vehicles at about 6.20pm on Friday

'I don't believe that he would want to hurt people, he wasn't like that,' she told 7News.

She said her son had stopped taking his anti-psychotic medication two months ago, although he continued taking other mood stabilisers.

'He was not [a] terrorist, he has got mental health issues,' she said.

Khan's family claim he was 'normal' when taking injections for an important medication, but when he stopped them, he wanted to move out.

He was employed at a café at Melbourne's Sunshine public hospital, approximately 20km west of Bourke Street, and worked the day of the tragedy.

But Khan did not complete his shift on Friday and instead left work early.

Video of Khan has also emerged online with him sitting in a car intensely staring into the camera lens. Others clips show Khan dancing by himself.

After the horror scenes on Friday evening Khan was filmed bizarrely lying on the windscreen of his mother's car, dressed head to toe in white.

Two police officers dragging him off the Toyota, arresting and restraining him, then marching him away from shocked onlookers.

Victoria Police alleged Khan accelerated after allegedly mowing down three pedestrians at a tram stop on the corner of Bourke and Swanston Streets.

I guess he couldn't get his hands on a Cab so he got so obsessed with not having one he pinched his Mum's car and had a psychotic episode with it.

I could just imagine the sentencing "Gimmee a discount"!

A love triangle is being blamed for sparking a brutal stabbing at Elizabeth Downs that has left a northern suburbs father-of-six critically injured.

Witnesses say there were at least eight suspects and some of them belong to a notorious African gang.

Police release e-fit after a dog walker was sexually assaulted

Thames Valley Police say the sexual assault happened at around 5.45pm on August 14 in an open meadow close to Woolley Firs in Maidenhead.

The victim was walking her dog when she saw the suspect crouching in the overgrowth alongside the path.

She felt uncomfortable and kept walking towards a wooden gate, but when she got there she looked behind her to see the suspect walking towards her.

The suspect grabbed her jumper and tried lifting it up, causing the victim to scream. He then ran off in the other direction.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Peter Fitzer said: 'I am releasing this e-fit image in the hope that someone recognises the man depicted.

'If you recognise the man pictured or have any information that could help with our investigation, make a report online or call 101, quoting reference number 43230363229.
