A 21-year-old Wollert man was one of five people aged between 19 and 21 arrested over the killing, with two of them now charged with murder.

On Mach 14 Melbourne Uber driver Hassan Ahmed, 28, was stabbed seven times by two male passengers  after picking them up in the CBD at 3.30am.

The severity of knife injuries is getting worse but people clearly don't understand the damage they cause, Meei Yeung, The Alfred's deputy director of trauma, said

She told The Age a tiny wound often hides 'extreme havoc' inside the body.

'It appears knife crime is increasing and the severity is increasing as well.'

A senior police officer who asked not to be named said stabbings have never been worse or more brutal and that a 'knife culture' was growing amongst young groups of men.

'Everyone's carrying knives now and everyone is getting stabbed as a result.

'Ten years ago, stabbings weren't a thing. Now every second job is an assault where a stabbing is involved,' a senior Victorian Police officer told The Age

Melbourne youth advocates also said children as young as 10 were now carrying knives.

Some youth centres have commenced campaigns to warn against the dangers of carrying blades.

There are legitimate concerns the escalation in knife crime is in fact now Australia-wide.

Knife attacks, including fatal stabbings, are now common in most Australian cities, often between groups of teens and young men - or instigated by them.

On January 22, 16 year old Balin Stewart died from stab wounds on Queensland's Sunshine Coast. A 17 year old boy was charged with murder over the incident, which occurred at a house in Buddina

Last weekend a violent brawl outside the Nairobi Lounge in Adelaide left a 24-year-old man in hospital after suffering multiple stab wounds, with five others requiring treatment in hospital.

In December a 40-year-old father was killed and his son, 19, and another man, 23, were left fighting for their lives following a triple stabbing at Whalan Reserve near Caitlin Close in Whalan, western Sydney.

There have also been several fatal stabbings in Sydney's western suburbs.

In August 2019, Michaela Dunn, 24, was stabbed to death in Sydney's Clarence Street by Mert Ney, 24. He was jailed for 44 years

Awareness of knife possession by young men has been increasing since Jack Beasley was stabbed to death at Surfer's Paradise in 2019.

While the long-terms trends in NSW indicate weapons offences are falling there is concern about knife activity amongst young people.

Prohibited a regulated weapons offences in NSW - including banned knives - were up nearly four percent for the five years to December 2021

'I have spoken with families from NSW and Victoria and they all have concerns there also,' Brett Beasley, Jack's father, told Daily Mail Australia.

'It's not just a problem here in Queensland. I have family, nieces and nephews, living down there and they are all very scared and concerned when they go out... the whole youth justice system needs looking at.'

Mr Beasley has helped in the push for a trail of metal-detecting wands on the Gold Coast by police but says they need to be more available and they are just the start.

'We have managed to have the detection wands approved for a 12-month trial here in Surfers and Broadbeach and that has been a huge success.

'The trial is up for review April 30 and hopefully here to stay. I think every police officer country-wide should have these devices on them and have the power to search whoever they want

After Jack Beasley died on December 13, 2019 his relatives set up the Jack Beasley foundation.

A major aim was to raise education in schools, sports clubs and youth clubs about the real impacts of carrying a knife.

'We have an education program that we take to schools and it is a massive success and we have great feedback from the kids and the teachers,' Mr Beasley said.

'Maybe we could bring our program to Victoria? It's all about education. That's what these kids need

Excerpt: A woman has been left with a traumatic brain injury after she and two friends were allegedly attacked by eight Mostly Peaceful African gentlemen on a bus

The women were travelling between Dandenong Station to Bock Street in Doveton, in Melbourne's south-east, at 7.40pm on February 26 when the incident happened

The three women were allegedly set upon by the group, leaving one woman with a broken nose and a mild traumatic brain injury. The other two victims suffered bruising.

No one has been arrested over the incident.

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Shane Patton has described the incident as 'very disturbing'.

'For something like this to happen on public transport is just horrendous,' he said.

'It was actually a very serious attack,' he told radio station 3AW

'We still don't have the offenders for that,' he said.

'Local detectives are trying to identify the offenders and they've put up some footage.'

Police have released images of two men they wish to speak to in regards to the incident

Detectives have arrested 13 people black bastards after a Victorian man was stabbed to death in a vicious street fight in Adelaide's city centre early on Monday morning

Just after 2am, police were called to North Terrace after a man was found lying on the road fighting for his life at an intersection after he was attacked by a gang.
The 25-year-old man had multiple stab wounds to his chest and died shortly after officers arrived.

Police believe there had been a running fight between rival groups of men through the city streets and the victim was chased down before he was stabbed to death.

'The attackers ran down the victim and when he fell, he was stabbed while he was on the ground,' Assistant Commissioner John Venditto said.

South Australia police spokesman said the attack did 'not appear to be a random incident' and a murder hunt has been launched by detectives and forensic experts.

Mr Venditto said police believed the murder was linked to Operation Meld, a crackdown targeting youth gangs.

'The theory at the moment is that this is an incident between two groups that know each other,' he said.

'The threat to the public is there because they've got bladed weapons and other weapons and react with spontaneous acts of violence ... 13 violent people are now in custody

He said police resources have already been increased in the city centre and community leaders were working with investigators to tackle the gang problem.

CCTV footage led officers to a hotel on Franklin Street where police arrested seven people before a car was spotted two hours later and five more were arrested. 

Officers searched the blue Holden sedan and found two knives, a machete and cash.

The five occupants, including a homeless 16-year-old, two 18-year-olds, a 20-year-old and a 25-year-old man were arrested for carrying an offensive weapon.

The vehicle was seized for forensic examination. All men were refused bail or did not apply for bail and will appear at Adelaide Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

About an hour later a black Mazda sedan was stopped by police on Pirie Street and a 19-year-old was arrested for breach of bail.

Police say they have yet to link the arrested men to the stabbing and no-one has yet been charged in connection with the death.

The seven other men arrested earlier - aged from 19-23 - were on unrelated matters ranging from outstanding arrest warrants to assault charges and alleged weapons offences

South Australian police have laid more than 120 charges against "several" people following the launch of a special task force aimed at curbing so-called youth gangs.

Operation Meld was launched last July, after a spate of violent brawls and crimes in Adelaide's northern and western suburbs.

Assistant Police Commissioner Scott Duval said the offending involved teenagers from Adelaide's Sudanese community.

"We've had people stabbed, we've had large fights... where weapons, including knives, have been taken to those fights," he said.

"The circumstances of that murder are the attackers ran down the victim and then, when he fell, he was stabbed on the ground and assaulted," he said.

Arrested men connected with gang taskforce

SA Police launched a special taskforce called Operation Meld last year, targeting gangs made up largely of young men from Adelaide's Sudanese community.

In February, they said violence had begun spilling out into Adelaide's wider community, including through a series of robberies.

Assistant Commissioner Venditto said Monday's violence was connected with the same group of people.

"They're certainly part of the gangs that Operation Meld has been focused on," he said.

A teenager accused of stabbing a man in an alleged Sudanese gang murder has refused to go to court - instead deciding to sleep in his jail cell

The 17-year-old Victorian boy was charged with murder after allegedly stabbing a 25-year-old to death in North Terrace, in Adelaide's CBD, during the early hours of Anzac Day.

The teen was one of four males who were arrested at Adelaide airport following the fatal brawl while allegedly trying to flee back to Victoria.

He was due to face the Youth Court on Tuesday, but his case proceeded in his absence after Remand Centre Staff reported he did not want to attend. 

'We've tried to get him up but he's pulled the quilt over his head, rolled over and will not move,' a staffer told the court via video link, The Advertiser reports.

'He's covered his head, he's refusing to come in

Counsel for the boy, whose identity is legally suppressed due to his age, did not apply for bail for his client.

The Meadow Heights boy, who has also been charged with aggravated affray and travelling under a false name, was remanded in custody to face court next week. 

Police prosecutors had asked the for media to be excluded from the hearing arguing the case was 'extremely complex' and in its ' very infant stages'.

However, the request was declined after the media outlet successfully insisted the case was in the public interest.

Police subsequently adjourned the case and said the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions will now take over the matter and seek 'targeted suppression orders'.

The three other Victorians arrested at the airport - aged 21, 18, and 16 - have been charged with aggravated affray.

The 18-year-old also faces an additional charge of travelling under a false name.
