Students at a Melbourne high school have been left shocked after they were made to stand up and be publicly humiliated for being white, Christian males.
Last Wednesday, co-ed school Parkdale Secondary College, in the south Melbourne suburb of Mordialloc, was visited by a social worker from the local Kingston Council.
The social worker spoke about privilege, pronouns and intersectionality
During the presentation, the social worker is alleged to have asked for boys who were straight, white and Christian to stand up in front of their peers.
They were then told they were responsible for being "oppressors" because of their privilege.
Students were reportedly left shocked and feeling ashamed following the incident.
Principal David Russell said the school was "extremely disappointed" and that the presentation was supposed to support people from gender diverse backgrounds.
Kingston City Council CEO Tim Tamlin said he was left dumbfounded and disappointed as to how the incident occurred.
"The presentation is intended to talk about diversity it's intended to make people feel included and make people relate to each other and in this instance it hasn't," he said
Tamlin added he's asked for an investigation into the incident.
"I've asked for an urgent investigation to go into that matter to understand exactly what was the course to designed to do and how was it executed," he said.
The incident received mixed reactions online, with some agreeing the subject of gender diversity should be discussed, but not in the way that it was at Parkdale.
"Now this could have been good, school can't be about history and trigonometry alone anymore, the world is different, families are different, but someone's wires got crossed - how she didn't know that was daft is shocking," one person said.
Online reaction
Others didn't agree, while some blamed left-wing politics.
"This is what happens when you let the ideologues into schools," one said.
"It is time for some serious pushback against this identity politics that serves to tear us apart not bring us together."
"Nobody should ever be told to apologise for their gender, colour of skin or religious beliefs," another person said.
It comes exactly a month after another Melbourne high school copped criticism for making its male students apologise for sexism.
