Ms Hanson urged her colleagues to acknowledge "the deplorable rise of anti-white racism and attacks on Western civilisation" and say "it is OK to be white".

That last part was a reference to a T-shirt right-wing Canadian activist Lauren Southern wore when she visited Australia in July.

As news.com.au's Frank Chung reported at the time, the catchphrase "It's OK to be white" was originally conceived by trolls on 4chan's "politically incorrect" image board.


Signs and cards bearing the phrase have popped up in all sorts of public places since, occasionally inducing outrage.

"I hope that the Senate does the reasonable thing today by supporting this motion. Anyone who pays attention to the news or spends any time on social media has to acknowledge that there has been a rise in anti-white racism and a rise in attacks on the very ideals of Western civilisation," Ms Hanson said before the vote.

"I would also hope the Senate does the right thing and acknowledges that it is indeed okay to be white. Such a simple sentence should go without saying, but I suspect many members in this place would struggle to say it.

"People have a right to be proud of their cultural background, whether they are black, white or brindle. If we can't agree on this, I think it's safe to say anti-white racism is well and truly rife in our society."

Ms Hanson's motion was defeated by a close margin, 31-28. Labor and the Greens voted against it, while many government senators voted in favour.

One of the opponents, Justice Party Senator Derryn Hinch, reacted furiously.

"With the federal election looming I'm starting to think that Senator Hanson and her former colleague Senator (Fraser) Anning are now locked in a race to see who can be the biggest, the loudest, racist bigot in their contest to see who can get to the bottom of the sewer first," Mr Hinch said.

"That's what this obscene motion is all about. It could have been written on a piece of toilet paper, which reminds me of that old story about a toilet cleaner. People were nicknamed Harpic because they would clean around the bend.

"There are all sorts of things behind this latest stunt by Senator Hanson. She's using this chamber as a conduit for her headline grabbing stunts. Remember the burqa."

Ms Hanson tried to move her motion during the last sitting period in parliament three weeks ago, but ran out of time. Mr Hinch blasted her attempts to drum up publicity for it.

"Senator Hanson tweeted a very clever line-up dreamed up by, I imagine, a giggling cohort in the backroom, her line about 'It's okay to be white' and then went public with it before most of the senators in this chamber had even heard about it," he said.

"She tweeted it and went on Sky that night and published it before it was even tabled here in the Senate. I would say this sort of racism is not only wrong, it could be dangerous."

PAULINE Hanson has unleashed on the government after its humiliating "unforeseen backflip" on her controversial "It's OK to be white motion".

"Both Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Senate leader Mathias Cormann have woken with white guilt and withdrawn their support," the One Nation leader said.

"It's one of the most remarkable days ever in Australian politics that Labor, Liberal and the Greens are now united in saying they would vote against a parliamentary motion condemning attacks on Western civilisation and white people because of their skin colour.

"If I had said it's OK to be black, every single senator in the chamber would have voted for it.

"As I stated on the floor of the Senate, I have always believed it is OK to be black, white or brindle."

In her motion yesterday, Ms Hanson urged her colleagues to acknowledge "the deplorable rise of anti-white racism and attacks on Western civilisation" and say "it is OK to be white". It was narrowly defeated 31-28 in the Senate.

Labor and the Greens voted against the motion, but 23 government senators supported it, including Trade Minister Simon Birmingham, Small Business Minister Michaelia Cash and Communications Minister Mitch Fifield.

Five Coalition senators who were not present were paired with senators who opposed the motion, so essentially, voted for it as well. Among them was the government's Senate leader Mathias Cormann - who moved to redo the vote today.

This time, Ms Hanson's motion was defeated on the voices, so no vote tally was recorded. She wasn't even present in the chamber.

Labor Senator Penny Wong called the mulligan a "pathetic attempt at a clean-up".

"They all voted for a motion that included a phrase that everybody knows is used by white supremacists. All of you did so. And now you want to come in and say, 'Oops, we made a mistake.' We don't believe you. No one believes you," Ms Wong said

Earlier today, Mr Cormann said an "administrative process failure" had caused his colleagues to vote the wrong way on Ms Hanson's motion. He fronted the media to take responsibility for the screw-up after Prime Minister Scott Morrison condemned it as "regrettable" and issued a "please explain" directive.

"Yesterday, as a result of an administrative process failure, the government senators in the chamber ended up, on advice, voting in support of the motion. As leader of the government in the Senate, I take responsibility for that error and I'm sorry that that happened. It is indeed regrettable," Mr Cormann said.

"Let me make it very clear. We did not support the form of words that was chosen in that motion."

Mr Cormann said the plan had been for the government to "deplore racism of any kind but not to actually support the motion

It was spawned when an American university, Boston College, tore down a pair of provocative signs in October last year, saying they were "offensive".

The posters bore an image of Uncle Sam, with the caption: "I want you to love who you are. Don't apologise for being white."

The 4chan trolls reacted by refining the sign's message and distributing new posters at other universities across the country. Here is the original post laying out their "game plan".

"Normies tune in to see what's going on, see the posters saying 'It's OK to be white,' and the media and leftists frothing at the mouth," the plan read.

"Normies realise that lefties and journos hate white people, so they turn on them. Credibility of far left campuses and media gets nuked, massive victory for the right in the culture war, many more /ourguys/ spawned overnight."

Ms Hanson, for her part, has angrily denied any suggestions her motion was racist.

The signs, which feature the slogan "It's OK to be white", were placed around Adelaide on Thursday morning, including one outside Senator Hanson-Young's electorate office.

On Twitter, Ms Hanson-Young said such "pro-Nazi slogans" weren't welcome in Adelaide.

"This white supremacist slogan has no place in Adelaide and no place in 2018," she told The Advertiser.

Ms Hanson-Young said the white supremacist slogan was a direct attack on the state's welcoming, multicultural community.

The incident comes after controversial Queensland MP Pauline Hanson mounted an attempt to move a motion to have the Senate acknowledge that "it's OK to be white".

The motion was defeated 31-28 by opponents who called it a racist slogan from the white supremacist movement, despite being supported by a number of Coalition MPs.

Senator Hanson-Young said the person responsible for the signs in Adelaide should be ashamed of themselves.

"It is good to see many of these signs have been ripped down by decent people who will not stand for this divisive language being used in our streets," Ms Hanson-Young said.

South Australian Multicultural and Ethnic Affairs Commission chair Norman Schueler said it was not possible to say with certainlty whether the posters were put up by people who knew the neo-Nazi links to the slogan.

However, he said it was most likely the origin of the signs were from an ultra far-right-wing group.

"The slogan has become popular among white nationalists intent on creating racial divisions and recruiting people to a mindset that our culture is under imminent threat from minority groups," Mr Schueler said.

He said Senator Hanson-Young's claim the posters were linked to neo-nazis were "over the top" considering she did not know their origins.

"The other problem is that these things are a cry for attention," he said.

"We pride ourselves on our multicultural model in Australia that is an example to other countries. Fortunately, it's ok to be any colour in this great country of ours and no reasonable person claims otherwise."

POLICE are investigating the placement of several signs bearing neo-Nazi-linked slogans, warning the public to be careful if removing them.

An SA Police spokesperson said there were uncorroborated reports on social media suggesting razor blades were being affixed under the "It's okay to be white" posters to hamper removal.

The Advertiser has been told Flinders University staff and students were also warned of the potential danger, and to report them to police rather than attempt removal.

"SAPOL is investigating the motivation and intent of the persons posting the signs," an SA Police spokesperson said.

"When the person/s responsible for posting the signs are identified and located they can be issued with a $315 fine plus $60 victims of crime levy for the offence of post bill without consent under section 23(1) of the Local Nuisance and Litter Control Act 2016."

They added that more serious offences would be considered if the posters are found to be dangerous.
