81-year-old John Gilbert Gordon has been jailed for sending bullets, detonators and threatening letters to politicians including Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Opposition Leader Tony Abbott as well as other numerous politicians, religious leaders and bank executives. The letters also contained threats to bomb refugees and a claim that he had poisoned the drinking water of a motel housing asylum seekers.
None of the letters made it to their intended recipients, but were instead opened by administration or mail room staff, the court heard.
Gordon pleaded guilty to 12 charges, including six of using a postal service to send explosives. He was sentenced to two-and-a-half-years, to be released after serving eight months. [more ...
