CHARLESTON, S.C. — A white man opened fire during a prayer meeting inside a historic black church in downtown Charleston on Wednesday night, killing nine people in an assault that authorities described as a hate crime. The shooter remained at large Thursday morning.
Police Chief Greg Mullen said he believed the attack at the Emanuel AME Church was a hate crime, and police were looking for a white male in his early 20s. Mullen said the scene was chaotic when police arrived, and the officers thought they had the suspect tracked with a police dog, but he got away.

"We will put all effort, we will put all resources and we will put all of our energy into finding this individual who committed this crime tonight," he said.

Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley called the shooting "the most unspeakable and heartbreaking tragedy."
"The only reason that someone could walk into a church and shoot people praying is out of hate," Riley said. "It is the most dastardly act that one could possibly imagine, and we will bring that person to justice. ... This is one hateful person."

The attack came two months after the fatal shooting of an unarmed black man, Walter Scott, by a white police officer in neighbouring North Charleston that sparked major protests and highlighted racial tensions in the area. The officer has been charged with murder, and prompted South Carolina lawmakers to push through a bill helping all police agencies in the state get body cameras.

The church's current pastor, state Sen. Clementa Pinckney, was a sponsor of that bill.

In a statement, Gov. Nikki Haley asked South Carolinians to pray for the victims and their families and decried violence at places of worship.

"While we do not yet know all of the details, we do know that we'll never understand what motivates anyone to enter one of our places of worship and take the life of another," Haley said.

Soon after Wednesday night's shooting, a group of pastors huddled together praying in a circle across the street.

Community organizer Christopher Cason said he felt certain the shootings were racially motivated.
"I am very tired of people telling me that I don't have the right to be angry," Cason said. "I am very angry right now."

Even before Scott's shooting in April, Cason said he had been part of a group meeting with police and local leaders to try to shore up relations.

The Emmanuel AME church is a historic African-American church that traces its roots to 1816, when several churches split from Charleston's Methodist Episcopal church.

One of its founders, Denmark Vesey, tried to organize a slave revolt in 1822. He was caught, and white landowners had his church burned in revenge. Parishioners worshipped underground until after the Civil War.

Mullen would not say whether Pinckney was inside the church at the time of the shooting.

Law enforcement officials on Thursday reportedly captured 21-year-old Dylann Roof, the suspected shooter, in Shelby, North Carolina, according to CBS News's Major Garrett. Federal officials are investigating the attack as a hate crime, the Huffington Post's Ryan Reilly reported.

Among the reported victims was Clementa Pinckney, a 41 year-old state senator, church pastor, and rising star in the South Carolina Democratic Party. Charleston Police Chief Greg Mullen described the shooting as a "hate crime," saying it was "the worst night of my career ... clearly a tragedy in the city of Charleston."

MORE details have emerged of how Dylann Roof got a handgun for his 21st, and "wanted to start a civil war" before allegedly committing a church massacre. 
 
Charleston police captured Roof, the white suspect in a mass killing at one of the oldest black churches in the United States, the latest gun massacre to leave the country reeling.

Roof was given a .45-caliber gun from his father when he turned 21 in April this year, a senior law enforcement source briefed on the investigation said.

It is not known whether he used the gun in the church massacre, but his roommate revealed he had been "planning something like that for six months".

Dalton Tyler, who has known Roof for around seven months to a year, told ABC News America he saw the suspect last week.


"He was big into segregation and other stuff," Tyler said.

"He said he wanted to start a civil war. He said he was going to do something like that and then kill himself."

Roof's Facebook page revealed he wore pro-apartheid flags, with an image of him in a jacket with the flags of apartheid-era South Africa and Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe).

Another Facebook photo of Roof showed him sitting on the roof of his car with a license plate that had a Confederate flag on it.

John Mullins, who went to high school with Roof, told The Daily Beast he was "kind of wild."

"He used drugs heavily a lot," Mullins said.

"It was obviously harder than marijuana. He was like a pill popper, from what I understood. Like Xanax, and stuff like that."

He also made a lot of "racist jokes" while growin up, but Mullins said he never thought anything more of them at the time.

"He made a lot of racist jokes, but you don't really take them seriously like that. You don't really think of it like that."

Joseph Meek Jr. and Roof were best friends in middle school, and reconnected a few weeks ago when Roof reached out to Meek on Facebook.

Meek told AP Roof had begun ranting about the murders of Trayvon Martin and Freddie Gray and saying that black people were "taking over the world."

"He said blacks were taking over the world. Someone needed to do something about it for the white race," Meek said.

"He said he wanted segregation between whites and blacks. I said, 'That's not the way it should be.' But he kept talking about it."

A woman who claimed to be the mother of Roof's former stepmother told the Wall Street Journal of how he became a loner.

"He apparently told people that he was involved in groups, racist groups," she said, adding that he stopped going to high school.

"He turned into a loner in the last couple of years and no one knew why," she said. "He just fell off the grid somehow."

US Senator Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina, said his niece, Emily, was in an eighth-grade English class with Roof.

"He was quiet, strange, very unsocial and everyone thought he was on drugs," Graham said of the suspect, relaying the description from Emily and his sister, Darline Graham Nordone.

The niece did not recall Roof making statements related to race, Graham said.

"I just think he was one of these whacked-out kids. I don't think it's anything broader than that," said Graham, who is running for president. "It's about a young man who is obviously twisted."

Roof, now the accused gunman, allegedly walked into the Emanuel African Methodist Church, sat for about an hour then opened fire.

Sylvia Johnson, a relative of one of the victims, told MSNBC news a survivor had told her that the gunman had made a racist rant and reloaded five times during the attack.

"He said: 'You rape our women and you're taking over our country and you have to go,'" she told the network.

South Carolina is one of just five U.S. states that does not have a hate crime law, which typically imposes additional penalties on crimes committed because of a victim's race, gender or sexual orientation.

President Barack Obama said Thursday the attack stirred up "a dark part" of U.S. history and illustrated the continuing dangers of the nation's liberal gun laws, which gun-rights supporters say are protected by the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

The church, known as "Mother Emanuel," was founded in the early 19th century by black worshippers who were limited in how they could practice their faith at white-dominated churches. Burned to the ground in the late 1820s when one of its founders drafted plans for a slave revolt, the church was later rebuilt.

Compounding anger over the incident, the South Carolina capital continues to fly the Confederate battle flag, that was the symbol of the pro-slavery South during the U.S. Civil War.

In addition to the church's leader and Democratic state Senator Clementa Pinckney, other victims included three pastors - DePayne Middleton Doctor, 49; Sharonda Coleman Singleton, 45; and Reverend Daniel Simmons, 74.

Also killed were Cynthia Hurd, 54, a public library employee; Susie Jackson, 87; Ethel Lance, 70; Tywanza Sanders, 26; and Myra Thompson 59, an associate pastor at the church, according to the county coroner.

Area residents, including a group of nuns, filed past the historic church early Friday that was the site of Wednesday's shooting. Many tearfully offered prayers and left flowers near the line of yellow police tape, behind which law enforcement agents continued to gather evidence.

Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney has called for the immediate removal of the Confederate battle flag from outside the South Carolina Statehouse following the Charleston church shootings.

His call has scrambled the 2016 Republican presidential contenders into staking a position on a contentious issue.

So, now he's started a petition and said if the Confederate flag is removed from Statehouse grounds the African American Monument should also be removed.

On Tuesday, lawmakers discussed the possibility of removing the flag. According to the newspaper, the Post and Courier, reporters are conducting a poll that shows how lawmakers may vote on the flag issue. A WOMAN has been labelled a hero after making a bold move that could change the way America views equality.

Identified on social media, Bree Newsome made the risky climb to remove the Confederate flag from the South Carolina Statehouse grounds.

Calls for removing the flag have been renewed since nine black churchgoers were killed in what police characterised as a racist attack at a Charleston, South Carolina church last week.

"After SC refused to take down the flag in time for the funerals, activists took matters into their own hands," activist group Ferguson Action tweeted.

"We removed the flag today because we can't wait any longer," Ms Newsome said in a press release. ???

Extract: THE ex-inmate who gave alleged Charleston mass murderer Dylann Roof a prison beat down said his attack reminded him of the Alfred Hitchcock classic Psycho.

It was "like in the movies when the girl is in the shower and she gets startled," Dwayne Stafford, 26, told the website Black Collective.

The New York Postreports that during the assault last week, Roof "didn't speak whole sentences ... it was more like whining ... his cheeks were scarred," according to Stafford.

Roof and his attorneys did not press charges following the incident.

Roof has been in solitary confinement since he was arrested on June 18, 2015, a day after his deadly shooting rampage at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston.

Stafford was released from the Charleston County Detention Centre on $100,000 bond a day after assaulting 22-year-old Roof — with whom he regularly spoke — on August 8. The money was raised through crowd-funding.
He said he wanted to wanted to cozy up to Roof — in order to get inside the sicko's head.

"I wanted to approach him and see like what was you not getting for you to understand the fact that what you did is not understandable," he said. "I approached him like, 'What's going on with you.'"

Stafford called the nine black worshippers whom Roof allegedly slaughtered inside a historic church last year "family."

SYDNEY Swans star Lance Franklin says Anthony Mundine's call for players to boycott the national anthem at this weekend's AFL and NRL grand finals is "stupid".

On Thursday, champion boxer and former NRL player Mundine suggested that players should boycott the anthem to raise awareness of the treatment of indigenous Australians.

It follows the actions of many American athletes including San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick who have knelt during the US anthem to protest against racial inequality and injustice.

During the AFL grand final parade on Friday, Franklin said there would be "no chance" he would be following Mundine's advice in a blow from one of the country's most well-known indigenous athletes.

"First I've heard of it," Franklin said.

"Personally I think it's pretty stupid really, it's the Australian national anthem, it's a part of our sport, our history."

In response to Franklin's comments, Mundine suggested that the forward was "thinking for the system".
"He's thinking for the system and not thinking for his people and his heritage and his ancestors and the history of what's happened, the dark history of what's happened to his people.

"I'm a militant brother, I can't speak for Lance or anybody else. If I knew what I know now when I was in the grand final of '96 or 97 or 99, I wouldn't be standing at all, but that's me."

Mundine first made the call on Thursday stating his belief that the Australian anthem was written in a time of injustice.

"I just want to educate the people," he said.

"The Australian anthem was written at a time in the late 80s when Aboriginal people weren't even considered human beings ... and if you research enough you'll find there's five verses not two and basically its about Britain's superiority, the invasion, Captain Cook claiming the land.

"I just feel it ain't right, if we're going to make change for the better, especially if we want the people of Australia to move forward as one, as people, then it's got to start with the flag and the anthem they're the two iconic things we've got."

Three men accused of belonging to a white supremacist group here saw their alleged plot to kill a Bartow County couple as a trial run for murdering others, a prosecutor said at a bond hearing for one of them Friday.

Assistant District Attorney Emily Johnson called Luke Austin Lane, 21, of Silver Creek the "catalyst" and a recruiter for the neo-Nazi group in Floyd County
