A VIOLENT riot and looting has erupted in Missouri, after a protest over the killing of an unarmed black teenager descended into chaos.
Crowds of protesters broke windows of cars and stores after a day of demonstrations over the death of Michael Brown, an 18-year-old black teenager who was shot dead on Saturday by a police officer in the predominately black neighbourhood of Ferguson, located a few miles north of downtown St Louis, the Chicago Tribune reports.
At the time he was shot and killed by police, Brown was unarmed and allegedly surrendering with his hands in the air on Saturday.
A police officer shot him several times, killing him.
But, the St. Louis County Police Department's chief, which is handling the investigation into the incident, says Brown assaulted the officer and struggled over the officer's weapon.

Protests have unfolded peacefully in a Missouri town, and National Guard troops have withdrawn, 12 days after the fatal police shooting of a black teenager that led to racially-charged unrest.
No serious incidents were reported on Thursday as several hundred demonstrators defied stifling heat and humidity in the St Louis suburb of Ferguson to demand justice for 18-year-old, college-bound student Michael Brown.
It was the second straight night of generally orderly protest, after previous marches descended into riots, looting and tense stand-offs with police who fired tear gas to disperse the crowds.

AUTHORITIES say a police officer has been shot in Ferguson, Missouri, the scene of racial unrest in the wake of the August shooting death of a black 18-year-old by a white police officer.
TIM Zoll of the Ferguson Police Department told KSDK-TV that the officer was shot in the arm.
St Louis County Police spokesman Brian Schellman told The Associated Press that an officer was shot but said he had no further information.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting were not immediately clear.
The city has been the scene of unrest since the August 9 shooting of Michael Brown, an unarmed, black 18-year-old, by a white police officer.
The shooting on Saturday comes after Ferguson Police Chief Tom Jackson issued a videotaped apology earlier in the week and attempted to march with protesters, an effort that led to a clash with activists and several arrests on Thursday.

POLICE have erected barricades and businesses have boarded up their doors as the clock ticks down to a grand jury decision on whether to charge a white officer for shooting dead an unarmed black teenager in the US city of St Louis.
Michael Brown, an 18-year-old high school graduate planning to go to technical college, was shot at least six times by Darren Wilson in the suburb of Ferguson on August 9, inflaming racial tensions and sparking weeks of violent protests.

The mostly black suburb of 21,000, which has an overwhelmingly white police force and town government, has been on edge for days in anticipation of the jury's decision on whether Wilson should be prosecuted.
A 20-minute drive away in Clayton, another suburb where the grand jury has been meeting, metal interlocking fences and orange plastic barricades sealed off the Buzz Westfall Justice Center.
An officer unfurled yellow police tape reading "Do Not Cross" and "St Louis Police Lines" around the barricades. The road in front of the building has been barricaded off.
St Louis County informed businesses and residents that they were securing buildings in downtown Clayton and temporarily restricting traffic.
"We will keep these traffic restrictions in place as long as they seem prudent," it said in a statement.
St Louis County police spokesman Rick Eckhard defended the barricades as "just a preventive measure." US President Barack Obama has called for calm.
Missouri's governor has declared a state of emergency and the FBI deployed extra personnel.

A US grand jury has reached a decision on whether to indict a white police officer for shooting dead an unarmed black teenager in Ferguson, Missouri.There is no indication yet whether officer Darren Wilson will face charges for the death of Michael Brown on August 9, 2014 in the community of Ferguson, just outside St Louis.
He could be indicted with first or second degree murder, or manslaughter - or the grand jury could decide that he acted in self-defence and that there is no need for him to go on trial.
Brown, an 18-year-old high school graduate planning to go to technical college, was shot at least six times by Wilson.
'Yes, I can confirm that a decision has been reached,' a public relations manager for the Brown family's lawyer said.
