Illinois Gov. Pritzker slams 'profoundly un-American', 'racist speech' on coronavirus

www.foxnews.com

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker appeared to implicitly criticize President Trump during a Saturday coronavirus response briefing in Chicago.

Pritzker, a Democrat, outlined his forthcoming "stay-at-home" order for the Land of Lincoln and closed with a pointed critique of some of the rhetoric being used to describe the coronavirus.

Pritzker called the characterization that the coronavirus is "tied to" any particular ethnicity "profoundly un-American."

"Let us remember that this virus is not tied to any specific ethnic group or race," Pritzker said.

"People from every demographic, every race, ethnicity, gender or background have been infected. Suggesting otherwise or engaging in racist speech or acts is one of the most profoundly un-American things that I can think of," he said.

"The current crisis should drive home to all of us just how connected we all are. We can choose how we want to come out on the other side of this -- let's choose to be one Illinois."

Pritzker did not mention Trump by name, but the president has been widely lambasted by his critics who disagree with his moniker the "Chinese virus."

In response to a question from an ABC News reporter earlier this week, the president said the term is not racist.

Trump: "[The virus] comes from China. That's why -- I want to be accurate," he said, adding that a Chinese official wrongfully claimed the U.S. military had a role in the spread of the virus.

"That can't happen. It's not going to happen. Not as long as I'm president; It comes from China."

Trump's 2016 Democrat opponent, Hillary Clinton, claimed on Twitter last week that he is using "racist rhetoric" to "distract from his failures to take the coronavirus seriously early on."

Southern Illinois would be a much better place if we started by shipping the niggers in Carbondale back to Africa.

Illinois’ Stay-at-Home Order Extended Through April, Pritzker AnnouncesThe statewide stay-at-home order was initially issued from March 21 to April 7

Published March 31, 2020   • Updated 2 hours ago

Illinois' stay-at-home order has been extended until April 30, Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced Tuesday.

Pritzker said he would sign an executive order Wednesday that extends Illinois’ Disaster Proclamation, stay-at-home order, and the suspension of on-site learning at schools across the state.

"If we can end these orders earlier, I’ll be the first to tell you when we can start to make strides toward normal again," Pritzker said.

The news comes one week before the initial order was set to end and just days after the state saw its biggest rise in cases of the coronavirus pandemic so far.

Health officials warn that Illinois' cases have still not peaked and a continued increase in patients threatens to overwhelm state hospitals, healthcare workers and first responders.

The statewide stay-at-home order started on March 21 and was expected to continue until April 7, unless otherwise extended.

The order means schools across the state will not resume in-person instruction throughout the month of April. Chicago Public Schools had already planned on an e-learning schedule from April 13 through April 20 and district officials warned they were unsure how long e-learning could last.

Chicago's mayor hinted that such a decision could be coming, but she added Tuesday that she supports the decision.

"The city of Chicago stands ready to continue to partner with the state," she said.

When asked about the stay-at-home order during a teleconference with reporters, Mayor Lori Lightfoot said, "I think that realistically we’re looking at something’s that’s going to stretch deep into April."

Illinois saw its biggest one-day jump in coronavirus cases since the pandemic began Sunday, with 1,105 new cases.

By Tuesday, the total number of cases statewide neared 6,000 with 99 deaths.

Although the number of new cases reported Monday was nearly half those seen Sunday, both Pritzker and Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike said that is not an indication that cases have peaked.

Lightfoot said she expects Chicago cases to peak "in the coming weeks," warning of as many as 40,000 hospitalizations anticipated.

Already, the state is bringing back online once-shuttered hospitals and working to prepare Chicago's McCormick Place convention center into an alternate care facility for patients with mild symptoms.

The dyke nigger mayor of Chicago has granted itself supreme authority. With Chicago's mayor, basically our state's second governor. I hope this doesn't lead to our obese kike governor declaring an executive order also. I'm definitely not comfortable with the enemies of Creativity and the White Race possessing this much power over our rights. Especially with little to no checks and balances. It all seems like a very slippery slope to me.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot defends hairstylist visit amid coronavirus outbreak

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, a Democrat, defended a haircut she received recently despite salons and barbershops shutting down under the state’s stay-at-home order.

Lightfoot was criticized for her actions after previously stating in one of her public service announcements that “getting your roots done is not essential,” according to the Chicago Tribune.

The controversy began when the stylist posted photos with the mayor on Facebook last weekend, thanking her for her hard work and saying she had the “pleasure of giving Mayor Lightfoot a hair trim.”

The stylist was wearing a mask and gloves, the mayor said in defense of her haircut during a press conference earlier this week. “I’m the public face of this city. I’m on national media and I’m out in the public eye.”

The mayor added that the public is more concerned with other issues. “I think what really people want to talk about is, we’re talking about people dying here. We’re talking about significant health disparities. I think that’s what people care most about,” Lightfoot said.

Her explanation drew criticism from Alderman Carlos Ramirez-Rosa, a democratic socialist.

“She is under no obligation to look good on national TV. She is under no obligation to book national interviews,” Ramirez-Rosa, a frequent critic of Lightfoot, tweeted. “But she is under an obligation to follow and promote social distance in order to save lives.”

“This is a bad example for our city.”

While Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker couldn’t speak to the mayor’s decision to get a haircut, he said he hasn’t received a trim since the state’s stay-at-home order.

“I’m going to turn into a hippie at some point,” he said.
