'Bury them alive!': White South Africans fear for their future as horrific farm attacks escalate

Extract: LAST month, British woman Sue Howarth and her husband Robert Lynn were woken at 2am by three men breaking into a window of their remote farm in Dullstroom, a small town in the northeast of South Africa, about 240km from the nearest capital city.

The couple, who had lived in the area for 20 years, were tied up, stabbed, and tortured with a blowtorch for several hours. The masked men stuffed a plastic bag down Mrs Howarth's throat, and attempted to strangle her husband with a bag around his neck.

The couple were bundled into their own truck, still in their pyjamas, and driven to a roadside where they were shot. Mrs Howarth, 64, a former pharmaceutical company executive, was shot twice in the head. Mr Lynn, 66, was shot in the neck.

Miraculously he survived, and managed to flag down a passer-by early on Sunday morning. Mrs Howarth, who police said was "unrecognisable" from her injuries, had multiple skull fractures, gunshot wounds and "horrific" burns to her breasts.

"Sue was discovered amongst some trees, lying in a ditch," writes Jana Boshoff, reporter for the local Middelburg Observer newspaper. "Her rescuers managed to find her by following her groans of pain and then noticing drag marks from the road into the field.

"Her head was covered with a towel. Her eyes were swollen shut. She was partially clothed with just scraps of her shirt remaining. Her breasts and upper body was bloody. The plastic bag, shoved down her throat, took some effort to remove because her jaw was clamped down tightly.

"How she managed to breathe with the bag in her throat remains a mystery.

A South African activist who spoke out against attacks on white farmers has been found stabbed and beaten to death on her own farm.

Annette Kennealy, 51, was killed on a smallholding in Limpopo province on either Monday night or Tuesday morning where she had been staying with an employee, police said.

The alarm was raised by Ms Kennealy's mother, Kim Labuschagne, after she tried and failed to get in touch with her daughter on Tuesday.

A male relative then went to the farm where Ms Kennealy's body was found face-down in a pool of blood.

Police spokesman Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said Ms Kennealy was found with 'multiple stab wounds'.

Marius Mueller, director of Afrikaner campaign group AfriForum, told Marelo Media that Ms Kennealy had been found with head wounds.

She was found laying on her stomach, had wounds to her left eye and an open wound on her forehead, he said.

A hammer was found next to the body alongside an iron rod, he added. 

Another police spokesperson, Col Moatshe, said that a 40-year-old male suspect has been arrested and will soon appear before the Louis Trichardt Magistrate Court

Kennealy was a publicly outspoken supporter of the white Afrikaner community, a prominent farmer and a former councillor with the opposition Democratic Alliance.

In her last Facebook post, she shared a link alleging that 10 farm attacks, including one murder, had been reported in four days in 21019.

She also routinely shared links and stories relating to politics in South Africa, and the government's plans to start expropriating farms from white land-owners.

A DA spokesman in Limpopo paid tribute to her as news of her death spread, saying: 'The DA asked for justice to be served on those responsible for her untimely and gruesome murder.

'Ms Kennealy served the DA as a councillor between the years 2011 and 2014 and will be remembered for her selfless service and her commitment towards human rights.

'The DA would further like to express sincere gratitude to the South African Police Service and community institutions for their swift and professional reaction.

'We hope that those responsible will soon have their days in court and that justice will be served

Photos taken at a white squatter camp in South Africa reveal the squalid conditions in which hundreds of families live

The Munsieville camp, which lies 45 minutes from the city of Johannesburg, was one of the shanty towns that was formed after the fall of Apartheid.

Built on the site of a former dumping ground, the stinking camp houses families with young children, who were born after the end of Apartheid in 1994.

The children play with whatever they can find on the dirty, rubbish-littered ground while pet dogs lie around in the heat.

Poverty-stricken parents search through boxes and plastic bags of groceries from the back of a truck while a young child is seen clutching a take-away box with what appears to be a sausage and egg.

Inhabitants of Munsieville camp say they are short of babies clothing and require donations including everyday household items like brooms and buckets as well as their regular food supplies. One pregnant woman, 19, said she is in desperate need of clothing for a young boy.

Basic hygiene appears to be lacking at Munsieville, with a photo of a grimy-looking communal toilet revealing a lack of cleanliness, while empty rolls of toilet paper are stacked on the back of the toilet.

The camp has no electricity and very little food and running water. The huts are typically built with bare earth floors, but frequent floods wash away the topsoil and leave decades-old waste exposed.

Leigh Du Preez, the founder of the South African Family Relief Project (SAFRP), told DW that government policies designed to redress the economic imbalance between white and black people following the collapse of Apartheid have left more and more whites without a job. 

'We are losing our jobs because of the color of our skin, because we're white,' she said.


Of the camp, Du Preez said: 'There was nothing at all here before. There was no sanitation, no water, no electricity. Now there's one portable toilet for every three families. It stinks everywhere

White people in Apartheid South Africa enjoyed relative wealth and were almost guaranteed employment and housing. Following the collapse of Apartheid in 1994, the ruling African National Congress (ANC) government introduced laws that promoted employment for blacks and aimed to give them a greater share of the economy.

While the majority of white South Africans are able to find employment and live comfortably, some reports indicate that there has been a rise in the number of poor whites in the past two decades, which some have blamed on Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) legislation

BEE was launched by the government as a racially selective programme to reduce the economic disparities between created by Apartheid policies, which favored white business owners.

The post-Apartheid legislation, along with the global financial meltdown, has meant many white South Africans have fallen on hard times and are forced to live in slums.

A 2006 study found that between 1995 and 2005, more than one million South Africans emigrated from the country, citing violent and racially motivated black on white crime as the main reason, as well as the lack of employment opportunities for whites

According to a 2014 census, white people now make up less than 10 per cent of the country's population.

Estimates on the the percentage of whites living in poverty in the country run as high as 12%, with estimates of 400,000 whites living in abject poverty.

Fact-checking website Africa Check refutes this, however, claiming reports have 'grossly exaggerated the problem of white poverty' and puts the number of white households living in 'informal settlements' at 7,754. 

Du Preez said those residing at the camp have little chance of finding a job.

'As soon as they read your application and see you are from a white squatter camp, they turn you down. It's very difficult to get a job if employers know you live in one.'

She also pointed out many of the people at the township are under 20 and should not be discriminated against for crimes that took place before they existed
