A vote on same-sex marriage in federal parliament is looming, with Labor to move a bill next week and MPs predicting legislation will pass by the end of the year.Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has moved to head off a Greens bill by announcing he would bring his own legislation to parliament on June 1.'I have given notice that I will move a bill on Monday which will finally bring about marriage equality in Australia,' Mr Shorten tweeted on Tuesday.


Opponents of the bill have begun to lobby, saying Mr Shorten had failed to consider the consequences of changing the definition of marriage.Australian Christian Lobby director Lyle Shelton said it meant children would miss out on having a mum or dad.


'It is disappointing that Australia's alternative prime minister is legislating a family structure which requires a child to miss out on their mum or dad,' he said following the announcement.'I wonder if Mr Shorten has considered the consequences of changing the definition of marriage.'We urge parliamentarians to vote against the bill.


'But Labor frontbencher Anthony Albanese said his reading of the numbers showed there was now a favourable majority in both houses of parliament.In a surprise move, Mr Albanese torpedoed a push by his own Left faction for a binding vote on Labor MPs, calling for the retention of a conscience vote.


Labor deputy leader and Left faction member Tanya Plibersek, who will second Mr Shorten's motion, has called for a binding vote, arguing it is a matter of legal equality.'It is now time for Australia to join the nations that recognise people should be able to marry the person that they love,' Mr Albanese told parliament.'I strongly believe there should be a vote this year and it should be a conscience vote.


'He said Labor and the Liberals needed to respect that some MPs oppose the law change on the basis of their conscience.Prime Minister Tony Abbott has declined his frontbenchers a free vote, leading to the defeat of Labor private legislation in 2012.


However, the weekend success of a same-sex referendum in Ireland has led to calls to act in Australia.Cabinet minister Malcolm Turnbull expects parliament to legalise same-sex marriage before the end of the year.'I have never seen a social issue which has changed attitudes as rapidly as this one,' he said, adding his feeling was that legislation was 'very likely to pass'.Liberal MP Russell Broadbent, who opposes the laws, said he would be in favour of a free vote within his party.

But cabinet minister Ian Macfarlane says same-sex marriage is not a priority issue for the government and he will oppose it based on the views of his conservative Queensland electorate of Groom.Environment Minister Greg Hunt said he would be comfortable with allowing a free vote.Recent polls have put public support for gay marriage as high as 72 per cent.

TONY Abbott tomorrow will show what he thinks of Opposition Leader Bill Shorten's same-sex marriage bid by starting debate on a stack of legislation aimed at helping small business. 
 
That will be the government's priority from now until at least the start of Parliament's long winter break on June 26, and the Prime Minister has the House of Representatives numbers to enforce it.

Marriage equality activists believe the pressure on the Prime Minister, who opposes a change in the Marriage Act, won't come from the Labor legislation but from a growing perception among voters Mr Abbott is stubbornly refusing to acknowledge a change in community attitudes.

The Prime Minister has warned Mr Shorten not to play party politics with the issue.

"If our Parliament were to make a big decision on a matter such as this, it ought to be owned by the Parliament and not by any particular party," he told Parliament.


"So I would ask the Leader of the Opposition and all members of Parliament to consider this as we ponder these subjects in the weeks and months to come."

Mr Shorten and his deputy Tanya Plibersek will on Monday introduce legislation to amend the Marriage Act to allow same sex unions.

It will be a private member's bill and won't go far unless the government agrees to change its own legislative program, which the Prime Minister indicated today wasn't going to happen soon.

Mr Abbott said debate on Shorten's Bill would occur "at some point", and that the Liberals would not consider a free vote — considered vital for the law change — until then.

The Labor leader today was confident his Bill would be "debated over the coming days and weeks", but there are other matters the government wants considered.

"But I do have to say that my absolute priority, the government's absolute priority right now and for the next few weeks, will be helping small business," Mr Abbott told reporters.

"It will be getting our small business budget boost through the Parliament and I hope that the Labor Party is not distracted from the need to get these measures to strengthen our economy by helping small business through the Parliament as quickly as possible."

The Shorten/Plibersek legislation will be the third of its kind which Parliament could debate. The Greens and crossbencher David Leyonhjelm have rival bids in the Senate. The Greens are expected to call a meeting of all parties to co-ordinate efforts.

COUPLES could choose to use the term "partner'' instead of "husband" or "wife'' during wedding ceremonies under Labor's proposed marriage equality law. 
 
Opposition Leader Bill Shorten will on Monday introduce into Parliament a Bill to amend the Marriage Act to allow same-sex marriages.

The Bill proposes replacing the term "a man and a woman'' in the Marriage Act with "two people''. Straight and gay couples would both be permitted to be legally referred to as "partners''.

"This recognises that some couples prefer the word 'partner' to 'husband' or 'wife','' a memo on the Bill says. Ministers of religion would be exempt from conducting same-sex weddings if they were inconsistent with their beliefs.

The amended Marriage Act would recognise same-sex marriages officiated overseas.


The proposition Bill is likely to be replaced by legislation jointly sponsored by Labor and Liberal MPs.

Labor Leader Bill Shorten yesterday defended his decision to introduce the Bill before the Liberal Party has voted on whether to give MPs and senators a conscience vote.

Mr Shorten said he wanted to work with members of all parties on the issue but was being hampered by the lack of a conscience vote within the Liberal Party.

"There is not a hope for marriage equality in Australia while Tony Abbott does not allow a free vote for Liberal MPs,'' Mr Shorten said.

"On this issue it is not a ­Liberal or Labor issue. It's just an issue of how we treat people.''

A LIBERAL political adviser's claims the Irish "can't grow potatoes" and Australia isn't ready for a gay marriage referendum have shocked readers worldwide. 
 
Grahame Morris, who was a former chief of staff for former prime minister John Howard, told Sky News on Monday that Australia should not follow Ireland's example in having a same-sex marriage referendum during a TV debate on the PM Agenda program with host David Speers.

"I love the Irish and half the parliament's full of Irishmen, but these are people who can't grow potatoes, they've got a mutant lawn weed as their national symbol and they can't verbalise the difference between a tree and the number three," Mr Morris said.

"But — and then all of a sudden — Australia has to follow suit.

"I don't think people are ready. You run around Queensland, the Bush, and most of Western Australia and you can see people aren't ready.


"This vote is going to be divisive and I don't think most of the parties in parliament are ready to change.

"It isn't a life and death decision.

"I have a feeling this could end up like that stupid referendum on a republic where the electorate wasn't ready... and you've got to put it off for another 10 years."

Morris's comments have made headlines in Ireland, with pieces published on the Irish Times, the Irish Examiner and the Irish Mirror.

The Irish Mirror published comments from readers who bit back, claiming Morris was "ignorant" and "a bad image for the Australian parliament".

Social media users also expressed their strong views of Morris after he made his controversial comments.

LISTEN up straight people: it really doesn't matter if you disagree with same-sex marriage. It has absolutely nothing to do with you. Zilch. Nada. 
 
That might be hard to comprehend when you go through life thinking the world revolves around you, and that your opinion is the only one that matters. But the suggestion that gay people should be refused the same rights as you because you don't like the idea? Get real.

You can disagree with it if you want. It just doesn't matter. If every single human right hinged on the feelings of white, heterosexual people, can you imagine the world we'd currently be living in?

I can — it's called the '50s. You know, an era when racism, sexism and homophobia ran rampant. The only people who had real rights were white folks with a dick between their legs.

Some might remember it fondly as a time when society was built on a foundation of wholesome Christian and Catholic values. Unfortunately, that black-and-white religious morality was also responsible for the Stolen Generation and epidemic levels of child molestation — issues society is still dealing with the ramifications of today.



   

So forgive me for laughing when a Catholic bishop issues a warning that legalising same-sex marriage will create another Stolen Generation. We wouldn't want to step on their toes, after all they own the patent on making those.

Or when two Darwin catholic schools send home brochures against gay marriage.

Here's some breaking news: gay marriage also has nothing to do with religion. Religion claiming marriage is like McDonalds trying to say they invented hamburgers. They were around a long time before Maccas popped up.

In her book Marriage, A History: From Obedience to Intimacy, Professor Stephanie Coontz dismissed the notion that marriage between man and woman has always been the way. She wrote of multiple periods throughout history where same-sex marriage was accepted and seen as equal.

But I digress — the point is I'm sick of being told I'm not allowed to have equal rights because it makes heterosexual people uncomfortable.

I'm sick of being told I can have a civil union but the word marriage is sacred and should be restricted to straight people.



   

I'm sick of morons saying that allowing two consenting gay people to get married will open the floodgates for paedophiles and zoophiliacs, who prey on those unable to consent like vulnerable children and animals, to be accepted.

I'm sick of people asking: "isn't there more important issues to focus on?" You know, because making sure all humans are treated fairly, and equally isn't important.

Here's an issue we can focus on — why are there so many small-minded nitwits?

It will not impact your life at all. Nobody is forcing you to marry the same sex.

What is the worst that will happen? Gay people will get married? You might be invited to a few more weddings?

Some gay couples — just like their straight counterparts — will get divorced?

Gay people getting married won't take anything away from your marriage.

Instead of coming up with a list of inane, stupid reasons to defend your bigoted views, how about you just say you don't like it?




It isn't going to make you look any less stupid.

At the end of the day, you are allowed to have an opinion. Nobody has said "stop having that opinion". But that opinion should not be allowed to impact other people's lives.


The time for change is here. Whether you like it or not, the tide is turning. Same-sex marriage is inevitable, if that's now or in a few more years.

Even conservative politicians are coming around.

Federal Liberal Solomon MP Natasha Griggs believes marriage should remain between a man and a woman.

But she decided to put her own feelings aside and surveyed her constituents to find out what they think.

An overwhelming 86 per cent said that they support marriage equality.

"(Voters) think it's time for change," she told SKY News.

She will now support marriage equality, even if Prime Minister Tony Abbott does not allow a conscience vote.


Even conservative posterboy and CLP blunderer Dave Tollner said this week that he would vote yes for gay marriage and that "people should be able to do what they want provided they don't impact on people doing what they want".

Frankly, you should be embarrassed if Tollner supports a social issue like same-sex marriage before you do.

You can dig your heels in and complain as much as you want, it doesn't change the fact that it will happen eventually.

And at some point in the future, the opinions of those who stood against same-sex marriage will be relegated to footnotes in history, seen as antiquated views of small-minded bigots — just like those of the supporters of '50s era sexism and racism are now.

The real question is: when your grandkids open the history books and ask which side you were on during the same-sex marriage debate, do you really want to have to tell them that you were against equality?
